Marlin square

I lived next door to your last writer, Denise.  Her father was my cousin. I was married in 1964 at St Lawrence Church where my parents were also married. I had my wedding reception at my home in Marlin Square. Denise's parents had all the wedding gifts on show at their house as there was no more room in ours. I... [more]

The Ovaltine and Marlin Square

I'm not too sure of what years to mention apart from some happy memorys of the Ovaltine as a young lad with my mum and dad. David my dad was the village postman for many years and mum Annie was a local florist in the village. Ernie and Edna Edwards lived on the Ovaltine for many years in the main farmhouse,... [more]

Pridgeons Ltd, our family shop in Breakspeare Road

Pridgeons Ltd, in Garden Road, Abbots Langley was our family business from the 1940s until it was sold in 1972.  My grandfather Cyril Pridgeon and my grandmother Dorothy Pridgeon started the business. Then my father and mother Peter and Dorothy Pridgeon took over.  It was a grocers.  I used to help my parents during the school holidays and really enjoyed the... [more]

Service Quarters Sabine House

We had a lovely middle floor flat here, while my husband was at HMS Warrior, RAF Northwood. Our son was born at the then new maternity hospital, Shrodells at Watford.  We had a balcony, and one evening when all our husbands were working, it was three floors, 'The Birds'  horror film was on, so when they started attacking the windows, I... Langleybury School

Sadly, Langleybury School is no more. I had the good fortune to work for the school starting in 1989 and I continued until its closure many years later when it was merged with Francis Combe School in nearby Garston.

My role was to provide careers guidance to students from the age of 14 upwards and this included tracking... [more]

Miss Ovaltine

My Mother Joan Simmonds was chosen to be Miss Ovaltine. She was dressed in a costume which is very similar to the famous one which adorns the front of the Ovaltine, and was used on the front of the tins for a while. She was put into a horse drawn cart in this costume, but I am not sure... [more]

Watford Market

I can remember my mum taking us to Watford market, I just loved it, I was about 8 or 9, and loved looking at all the cheap jewellery, and coloured rubber balls, and toys, it had such a magical feel about it to me.
Mum always had to have a bowl of cockles with vinegar and pepper on them, from the... [more]

Watford Odeon cinema

I worked in this cinema in 1960, just tearing tickets. There was a woman who worked in the confectionery kiosk who had been there since it opened; her first job had been as pianist during the silent era. She went on to work until the cinema was closed and pulled down. (Sorry I do not know her name). ... [more]

Hertfordshire Living Memories

The Causeway development, carried out between 1955 and 1957, created a parade of shops, flats and dwellings on the site of Causeway House, which was finally demolished in 1957. It was built in 1720, and until 1857 had been owned by Miss Caroline Henty, the niece of the Edwardian boy's adventure story writer, G A Henty. The first occupiers of the... [more]

Hertfordshire Living Memories

In 1865, George Wander, a Swiss chemist, devised a new malted barley nutritional drink called Ovaltine. The company bought Parsonage Farm at Abbots Langley and Numbers Farm at Kings Langley in the 1900s, and the Ovaltine model farm was established at Langley in 1929. It was modelled on the farm created by Louis XIV for Marie Antoinette. By the 1950s, Ovaltine employed 1,400 staff... [more]

Hertfordshire Living Memories

Originally known as Langley House, this was the home of Robert Henty, brother of G A Henty and of Lord Kindersley, Director of the Bank of England. In 1928 the Salvatorian Fathers of Wealdstone bought Langley House, and part of it became the Roman Catholic church for the area. By 1930, a school had been established in the stables under Sisters... [more]
