Webbs Brewery-Hanbury Hotel

My husband worked at Webbs brewery from 1953-1956 as chief engineer. We lived at 3 Brewery Terrace (opposite the brewery). We often used the Hanbury Hotel and my husband knew Howard Collins I remember he was a very nice man and his wife also. My husband had an apprentice who lived in Aberbeeg but I can't remember his name. I also remember Mr Jones was the head of the brewery and lived in the house at the back of the cottages we lived in and the head brewer lived in a house just past us. I also remember a shop was just across from the pub. I also remember how surprised I was that women were not allowed in the bar and we had to sit in the lounge (no one else ever was in there). We had come to live in Wales because of the job and it was so different from Bristol. I must admit I did not like it at all and went home to Bristol most weekends. My daughter was born at Ebbw Vale in what was then known as the Rookery. After about 4 years we left Aberbeeg to live in South America and then back to UK. I can't remember many names that worked there, but Arthur Rudge was a name I remember. I have made a few trips back to see what it looks like and was most impressed with the scenery and how different it was in my time there. I hope this may be of interest to someone from the past. My husband is deceased long ago but as I happened to connect to this site by accident, I just had to send this memory.

RE: RE: Webbs Brewery-Hanbury Hotel

I have just browsed through your memory of Aberbeeg, and it may just be a coincidence that during 1954-56 I worked under a Frank Davies, in Webbs Brewery. I remember him living in Brewery Row, but before moving to Brewery Row, he lived for a short time in Swffryd. One of my jobs on a Sunday morning was to chop stick and take it to Swffryd on a push bike, and leave the bike there for him to get to work the following Sunday morning. If this is the same family, my sister Janet used to babysit your little girl.

RE: RE: Webbs Brewery-Hanbury Hotel

Hi, What a surprise. I remember Alan Shattock. He was an apprentice to my husband Frank Davis at Webbs brewery, Aberbeeg and we did live at 3 Brewery Terrace. Yes I do remember his sister babysitting for me. After leaving Aberbeeg we moved to Guana, south America. We then returned to Bristol (home) and Frank worked for several years at Avonmouth. We had 4 children and lived at Clifton. We divorced in 1976. He then went to live in London. He died there aged 61. I still live in Bristol in the harbourside area. I do remember my bike which was a sun and do remember Frank cycling to work on it from Swffred. I have been to Wales on a couple of occasions to look at the house at Swffred and Brewery Terrace. I suspect noone is likely to remember me now as its a long time ago. I see the brewery is now full of houses and so different to how it was. So pleased to get this message and if Alan wishes to e-mail me about his life since Webbs it would be a pleasure to read. Regards Marina Davis
