Fond childhood memories of Hurstpierpoint.
In 1964 my family, BOAKES, moved to Hurstpierpoint and opened a jewellers shop at 54 High Street. We lived above the shop premises, myself Susan Boakes, my parents, Gordon & Irene Boakes and my younger brother, Stephen Boakes. My grandmother Ellen Suckling also lived with us. We lived there until the sudden death of my father on 23rd November 1967. The... [more]

I have found a photo which was taken in 1962 of a young couple and a baby, all it says on the back of the photo is 'Sid with Gloria and Douglas'. Sid, I take it, is the baby. Then under the names it says 'Your son'. I found this photo in a bible in my uncle's house, his name being... [more]

The George Inn - Sarah & Walter Welling
My ancestral relatives are listed in the 1881 Census as the proprietors of "The High Street George Inn" in Henfield.
Walter W Welling (aged 50) and his wife Sarah Ann Welling (nee Smoker and aged 52) were both licensed victuallers and were obviously running a "family" business!
Living with them (all Wellings) were 7 children:
Louis H (7... [more]

For most of that period Jack & Jill were owned by Henry Longhurst, a celebrated golf journalist of his time and, since my father was writing about cricket in those days, they knew each... [more]

Hassocks Primary School in the 1950s
I was at the school from 1948 until 1955, at which point the 11+ sent me to Hove County Grammar. Starting in 1948 in Miss Wood's class I ended with two years in the top class with Miss Nichols. In between I was taught by Miss Lamper, Mr Kilby, Mr Bennett and Miss Bolter. Mrs Lake was headmistress.... [more]

As a child I lived in the cottages opposite the Post Office, we moved when I was around 9 years old and the houses were later pulled down. My memories of living there were very happy and I remember every year standing out front watching the Old Crocs go by. I now live in Hove and work in Crawley so drive... [more]

Dudley Pritchard and the Laylands of Jonada Small Dole
My family lived in Tooting, London but my mum's brother Charlie Layland was married to Josie who lived in a house called 'Jonada' with sons John, Tony, Trevor, and Andrew in Small Dole. We used to cycle the 42 miles down to Small Dole and stay there. Josie was fantastic and used to take us to Steyning Market, up to Chanctonbury Ring... [more]

Brighton and Hove Photographic Memories
Tudor Close House was a skilful 1920s conver- sion of much older farm buildings into seven houses. They were con- verted into a hotel, as seen in this view, but shortly afterwards the building was reconverted back to twenty-nine flats.

Brighton and Hove Photographic Memories
Many schools were established in the Brighton area, for the bracing air was ideal for children. Perhaps the most famous is Roedean, established in new build- ings on the clifftop a few years after this picture was taken.
