King Street

Between 1959 - 1977 I lived on King Street. My mother fondly described our house as the one behind the iron railings. We sold plants and tomatoes from the good sized garden which backed onto Painters farm. One side was the Undertakers/woodyard and the other The Railway Public House. Opposite was Taylors Corn Store and above that Speeds Car Show Room. I played with children from Devonshire Terrace in Alfreton Park.  I remember the Church Methodists parades and Prince Philip opening the baths when we sat and lined King Street. Also the annual floats in Alfreton Park.
I would be pleased to correspond with anyone who has these memories.

RE: RE: King Street

Hi,
Oooh, nostalgia what.
Well. I lived at Springfield Crescent, Somercotes from 1948-66.
Myself and a pal also attended the opening of the new pool to see royalty in the flesh.
I remember the olde prison & the Watchorn paddling pool.
I Googled a current ariel maps shot and it seemed the bus station is gone, but not the market.
I recall the 'new' coffee shop/cafe with pinball that I and other stundents on route to Chesterfield Tech. frequented.
John Tams & Sylvia Butler (of the church hall by the new pool) opened the Upstairs Cellar folk club on the bus 'stand', and though I was a guitarist and in that crowd, I had unfortunately left for London by then.
I also knew Roger White who lived towards the Watchorn and I think his mum worked in or ran the milliners or hattiers in King St.
What were the 'floats' you refer to?
Bye for now.

RE: RE: King Street

I went to Mortimer Wilson school in 1965, do you have a brother? I think he was in my class, it's the last name, Stokes, that got my attention. I have lived in the USA for 35 years and am living in Seattle, WA. The headmaster's name was Winki Dors, at that time I was living in Meadow Lane. I have been back to Alfreton about 5 times in 35 years, the last time was 15 years ago. Do you remember the Marriots? Roy Marriot was in my class. Anyway, send me an email if this jogs your memory. Thanks.

RE: RE: King Street

At Mortimers in the 1950s, brothers Roy Marriott, Graham, Geoff, Ivan, Trevor. Graham being the eldest who was in my class. Roy unfortunately died a few years back, heart problems I believe. The Stokes I remember were Jim who I used to fish with, also a younger brother whose name I can' remember, and Georgina his sister, but they were off the Preston Avenue estate. This may ring some bells, cheers.
