The Best of Childhoods

I moved to Hunts Cross in 1948 when I was two. I lived in Laxton Road and went to Kingsthorne School from 1951 to 1957 when I, like virtually everyone else, passed the eleven plus. I went to Hillfoot Hey, now sadly demolished when it was only thirty years old!

Hunts Cross was a fantastic place to be a child... [more]

Alamein Barracks at Huyton

I had never even heard of Huyton, much less been there until I joined the Territorial Army in 1967. I had enlisted at a recruiting office in Manchester and attended the Alamein Barracks for my basic training in 1967.

In those far off days we wore our uniform instead of civvies when leaving the barracks and I have... [more]

Loudon Grove, Liverpool 8

I was brought up in no 3 Loudon Grove. However, on a recent visit I noticed that Nos 1, 3, 5, and 7 along with others have been demolished and only No 7 on that side of the road has been replaced with a new house. The location of 1, 3 and 5 is just grassed over. Does anybody know the... [more]

The office staff relocated to the main store during 1953/54. I worked with a friend called Margaret Langshaw. We both left to work at Littlewoods Pools in Edge... [more]

Liverpool and Merseyside Photographic Memories

Here we have a general view of Halton and its castle from the west. The castle was built by the new Norman lord of the manor of Halton, Nigel Fitzwilliam, in around 1071. The baronies of Halton and Widnes were combined in about 1200, and were later taken under the Duchy of Lancaster, where they remain today. The castle is owned... [more]

The top of the High Street was known officially as Devonshire Place, but the locals always called it Devonshire Square, even though it only had three sides. Our photographer is standing on Doctors Bridge over the Bridgewater Canal, and High Street runs left and right from the top of the square. Both the new high-level road bridge and the old transporter... [more]

Top Locks was the end of the Bridgewater Canal system - it had come all the way from Manchester and Worsley. Top Locks was named thus because if its location at the top of a large set of locks which opened in about 1780; they brought boats from the River Mersey and Liverpool up to the Bridgewater Canal. In 1800, canal... [more]
