St Catherine's Boarding School

I have very fond memories of the school and Mr and Mrs Cooper, and I was one of the privileged children to move to Parkstone in Dorset when the Coopers moved there. I was in Miss Stoddart's class and I can still remember the smell of the herbal cigarettes she used to smoke, and on the rare occasion she would share one with the class. At the end of the summer terms I remember us polishing the classroom floor with wax polish which had a really strong smell, not at all an unpleasant aroma. After prep classes in the evening it was a mad dash to the study to see who could be the first one in so that they could pinch Mr Cooper's dog-ends out of the ash trays, so we could re-roll them to smoke at a later date. Mrs Cooper used to read her newspapers in the study( television room) and if you so much as uttered a word she used to glare at you over the top of her spectacles, and if you left and came back into the room she used to tut at you. At weekends I remember the large wood at the bottom of the garden where we used to build dens and climb the trees. Those were some of my most treasured childhood memories of the school. Such a shame it was demolished. When I think of that beautiful hall and staircase that led to the girls' dormitory... Some of my friends were Arthur Flat, Michael and Ann Ireland, Sylvia Cowen, and Christine Baker. I often wonder what became of them all. I think Mr and Mrs Cooper's son Mellval had a farm somewhere down on the south coast. I would dearly like to hear from anyone else who was also at the school in the early 1960s.

RE: RE: St Catherine's Boarding School

I was at St. Catherine's from 1951 to 1955. I have previously posted a message, but I have remembered other people, and would love to hear from them, if they are still breathing (I am now nearly 70). We attended Church Parade with the Guides weekly and I once won the fancy dress parade in Almonsbury village on Coronation Day dressed as a milk-maid. Do you remember this? Leonard Partridge (English teacher) based in Bath. Patrick Thunder also a teacher. Mr Smith taught English. James Rushton came from Lancashire area (remember the bathroom incident?) Please get in touch, would love to know how you are. Thank you.

RE: RE: St Catherine's Boarding School

I was a pupil at the school . I would very much like to hear from other people from school, I have very fond memories from those days. I visited the site of the school in the 1970s, to show my wife the school. But unfortunately it was no longer there which made me feel very sad. I have tried over the years to contact other people. My granddaughter found this site. I would very much like people to contact me? I live in Clacton on Sea as I'm retired now. Looking forward to a new contact from school friends. Looking forward to a response. Yours sincerely, Colin Akers

RE: RE: St Catherine's Boarding School

I was a pupil at St. Catherine's and am amazed I have found this on the Internet! Well Robert, guess who this is???? It's Christine Baker and I remember also those dog ends!! haha. How I now think back how those really were the best days of my life. I also had the privilege of moving to Parkstone Pool with Mr. & Mrs Cooper till 1966. It is such a pleasure to have such fond memories from my youth to share with my family. Do you know of any more photos of the school, pupils or area? I managed to go back to where the school was built as I now live in Chadderton, just outside Manchester, only to find a derelict space. This brought a tear to my eye as you just can't rebuild memories like we have. I also returned in 1970 and stayed with Mr. & Mrs Cooper for a week and it was then I was told Melvin had moved to Australia. Unfortunately I lost touch and would love to hear if anyone knows of his whereabouts, or is in touch with Melvin. Just for anyone who knows me, I am now on Facebook and would love to keep in touch with anyone who remembers me. I am still amazed, Robert, that you mentioned my name on here, I nearly fell off my chair reading this. I will say bye for now and will keep checking back on here to see who else appears. Christine Baker(now Bispham)
