Alnwick, Cars Circa 1955
The above picture was from 1948, I can tell this by the types of cars here, especially the light coloured one half hidden in the background, which actually is the most modern for this year.
Birdcage Club
Hi Pete, we still have, in our family, a much loved painting of Dunstanburgh Castle which we bought from you for 7 pounds one night in the Birdcage ! You won't remember me but I married David from the Nags Head! Found this site when looking for paintings by you. Missed one at auction recently. The Dunstanburgh one has always been treasured. Happy days !!! Sue
The Great North Road
How great was the Great North Road when it squeezed through these ancient gates until the early 1970s? Traffic built up on both sides waiting to get through. For a child this was the spot that marked where our holidays began, as it would only be another 15 miles or so to the cottage on the coast. It felt as if we were driving through a tunnel, like stepping through the cupboard in the Narnia Books ...
The Campain Family in The First World War
Great-Uncle John Percy Norfolk married Hilda Sanderson Campain and she had family connections in Alnwick. They had no children and I have thus inherited a fascinating assortment of their old sepia photographs of Alnwick and their family there, taken in about 1915.
Bird Cage
Yes Pete, those were the days. You will remember my brother John Anderson and also Eric Richards who have both been asking if I had heard anything of you as Johnny lives in France and Eric in Germany but they are both on facebook if you want to contact them. I loved the Bird Cage - Alnwick's first real club - many a good night was had. It then became The Duke's Club. Val (Anderson) Thompson.
Found Good Accomodation
I think it was 1972, when I was hitchhiking north to Scotland and stranded in Alnwick late in the evening. I sat with my girlfrend at the well on a kind of marketplace thinking 'bout a place to sleep. Later a nice guy with a dog came around and talked with us. He fortunately invited us to stay at his home for the night. His home was above the birdcage club and his name is Peter McDermott. Regards Andreas Hille

The Bird Cage Club (den of Iniquity)
I am interested in anyone having memories of the Bird Cage Club in Alnwick. I ran the club in partnership with Stuart Manly (now owner of Barter Books in Alnwick). I would be interested if you have any photographs taken inside the club. I only have two photographs. I would be interested to know if you saw any bands, singers, attended any interesting nights etc etc.

Memories of Northumberland
College Days
We built our 60ft catamaran at the farm at the bottom of this lane. I met my husband in the Schooner Hotel on the 13th November 1970. I was attending Alnwick College and we lived in Nether Grange as opposed to the castle. Wonderful village, friendly people.
Nethergrange
I remember being at Nethergrange with Jean Newbigin, and remember when she met her husband to be, and the building of their boat. In fact later , when we moved to Ravenslaw in Alnwich (in our third year) Jean and I shared a room as I was also a student at Alnwick Teacher Training College, living at Nethergrange in Alnmouth for our first two years. Like Jean I also met my husband to be in the village. He lived at Barndale Cottage, opposite the Hope and Anchor pub. I had many happy hours walking round this piece of coast, and painted watercolours of it several times. It is a stunningly beautiful place, with very friendly people.
WARTIME HOLIDAYS
SUMMER HOLIDAYS IN THE WAR
I have just spent a very pleasant time looking though some photos on FLICKR, my! It did bring back memories, Alnemouth in the war time Dad used to run 16MM mobile cinema in the church hall and I saw Charles Loughton in Henry the Eighth there in a very early black and white film. We used to stay at the Schooner Hotel. I found an incendiary bomb on the sands and took it back to the hotel into the dinning room God! You should have seen them shift when I said 'Mummy Mummy look what I found!!!' a very old Colonel took it from me and clipped me round the head and dashed off!!
Jumping from concrete tank trap to tank trap up the estuary ..., pulling ourselves across the river hand over hand on the anti tank and boat steel hawser ... Asking Mother "What was that small balloon with a knot tied in it on the dray hatch outside the hotel??" Clip... Read more
The 60's
I lived in Alnwick and went to school at Alnwick County Secondary Modern and left in 1965. Have great memories of Alnwick as I grew up there and made regular visits until about ten years ago
Brownieside Cottages
My brother David and me - Jacqueline, were born in the row of cottages in Brownieside to our mum Jessie nee Bell and our Dad Harold Rose in 1942 and 1945. Dad was in the RAF and Mum was a nurse. I think we lived in the second cottage from the right. We later moved to North Charlton and then to Leeds.
I have been back since and was happy to see things hadnt changed very much from how I remembered - happy days.
