Pelham Road

A Memory of Alum Rock

I was born in Pelham Road on August the 18th 1940. We lived with my grandparents. My grandad used to play the piano in the Pelham Arms for free beer and one of my earliest memories is seeing him playing and having three or four pints of beer stacked up on the end of the piano! We lived down on the left hand side with the railway line at the bottom of the garden. I can remember my uncle, who must have been about twelve, running in with shrapnel from the bombs that were dropped close to the railway line. We moved over to Perry Barr when I was about three but these are some of my very first memories.

A memory shared by Colin Stokes , on May 10th, 2012.

Tips & Ideas

Not sure what to write? It's easy - just think of an important place in your life and ask yourself:

  • How does it feature in your personal history?
  • What are your best memories of this place?
  • How has it changed over the years?
  • How does it feel, seeing these places again?
  • Do you remember stories about the community, its history & people?
