Memories of Clackmannanshire

Trying to Trace My Great Grandfather

My great grandfather, Alexander Young, was a labourer residence Glenochil. He married Ann S Drysdale of Alva in 1887, his father is listed as Alexander Brown, Ploughman, deceased. I am trying to find out if they both worked on a farm in Glenochil. I keep getting heaps of info on HM Prisons but not very much on previous history on that area, maybe someone may be able to shed some light on my problem. Thanks

When we Were Kids: Part 2

My Name is William Speirs, in the 1940's we moved from Bellshill Lanarkshire to live in Fishcross, Alloa, Clackmananshire, Scotland. This is a short story about when we were kids in Fishcross from about 1946 till I left in 1959. The people I played with, my schools, Fishcross, Sauchie, then Fore brae’s at the top of Sunnyside, the characters of that time and the things we used to do. The Early Years - We left Bellshill ( Park Head Farm ) at the end of the war approx 1946, with all our worldly goods on the back of a cattle truck belonging to Park Head Farm, Bellshill, as my dad had got a job as a miner at the King O Muirs Private Mine which was down the Tullabody Road. We came to Fishcross and got a prefab, 54 Pitfairn Circle, as we were driving from Bellshill to Fishcross (about 20mph in those days) my dad was sat in the front with the driver and my mum and three sisters and... Miners

seems likea "million" years ago, but I was ( 6 yrs ) old and remember at holiday fridays, standing with a few other kids outside the pit-baths at the devon pit, asking miners if we could take their bags "pit clothes" home for them, and get a tip...
thrupenny bit, was a lot back then.

When we Were Kids

When we were kids in Fishcross we used to go fishing most weekends, play in the woods, go to the Dam, climb and fish the Ochill Hills, Tooks Pond for eggs, go to the pictures etc. I knocked about with Charlie and John Bradley, Big Jack Bolton, Breck's Bolton, John and Sammy Mcmillan, Jerry Fitzpatrick etc. The people I remember for a laugh were William Joseph Hunter (Cocky Joe) who used to put the coal in the houses for something to eat. And Willie (the Gut ) who rode around Alloa on his bike doing wheelies.
We had some great times - memories never to be forgotten.
The very best to all who read this.
William Speirs.

Bicycle Accidents Near Fishcross

Has there ever been any serious Bicycle accidents near Collyland Road? I overtook a cyclist as I was approaching Fishcross from Tullibody as I passed the Cyclist I looked over my shoulder too see if it was safe for me to pull in but there was no Cyclist there? I was thinking I've seen a ghost of a cyclist? Anyone help?
