Mother's Brother And Sisters

Just after the war Dad, Mum and I would travel every other weekend to visit aunts and uncles and cousins on our Norton motorbike and sidecar. We usually based our visit with Aunt Flo and Uncle Stan (a wartime despatch rider, now back with his wife), they lived at 27 Wellington Road at the top end of a steep road about 100 metres up the hill, and the amazing thing was their Golden Retriever would bark as soon as the bike turned into the road and Aunt Flo would put the kettle on, knowing we were not far away. Some holidays I spent with them and I would always have to accompany my aunt to the Weslyan Chapel in town for the Sunday morning service, and in the afternoon I would either with local lads or alone go up to the Dell, such a peaceful walk. I think my uncle's parents lived opposite. I remember a big fuss made when my aunt gave birth to Pauline Elizabeth, I was about 14 at the time and did not at that time understand the significence of a lady in her mid forties giving birth to her first child, although I do remember the surprise that the event caused, even to my aunt, as her doctor had failed to realise she was pregnant until about 7 months in, from memory she turned out a beautiful girl. I did not see a lot of my Andover relations after that. I also had a cousin, Brian Rogers, son of Hilda and Vic just down the road, and mum's brother William Ernest (married Edna), they had two boys, David 9 months older and Kenneth nine months younger than I. On a trip to Europe from Australia I visited them once in about 1978 when Ken was or had just been mayor of Andover, unfortunately having been in Australia I have lost touch with any relatives who might still be living in England.

RE: RE: Mother's Brother And Sisters

Hi again,

I have sorted through some old notebooks, and found my Betty Pauline's surname! I don't know where she was born, but her mother was Doreen Gill, and lived at 34. I believe the house was owned by someone called Archibald Stockwell, so I think Doreen may have been a lodger there. Wondering if it rings any bells with you!

I found a Liz Trubridge, listed as producer of a film called, 'From Time to Time.'

Regards

Sandie

RE: RE: Mother's Brother And Sisters

Hi, I enjoyed reading your memories of Wellington Road! I am researching my family history, and a distant cousin of my family lived at number 34 in the 1940's. I believe she had a child called Betty Pauline! I don't suppose your Pauline Elizabeth, and Betty Pauline could be one and the same, could they? I would be very interested to know! Unfortunately, I don't know their surname!

RE: RE: Mother's Brother And Sisters

Hi Sandie, Firstly what a great time I have on FrancisFrith and even though the numbers of past acquaintances grows quite slowly the occasional note such as yours is most welcome. Let me tell what I remember about Aunt Flo (Florence)(There was some regimen that came with it either call me Aunt Flo or Aunty Florence but do not mix them up) Uncle Stan was a despatch rider during the WW2 and after the war returned to his trade as a butcher they moved to another part of Andover when his business went well and the built a single story residence in another part of Andover where I believe my cousin Pauline Elizabeth Truebridge was brought up. I do recall her accepting the nickname of P.E,T. but did not like the name Pauline and if memory serves me right Elizabeth was her favoured name As I mentioned I did not see much of my relations after I left Hampshire and went to work in London and then later Australia and it was in Melbourne one day watching an episode of Doctor Who I saw on the credits an Assistant to the Producer one Pauline Elizabeth Truebridge I have always felt it was too much of a coincidence to not be my cousin. Her year of birth was circa 1950 and I have found no trace of either her or our male cousins (sons of my mother's brother) Kenneth and David Butcher the former one time mayor of Andover and property developer 9 monthd younger and David 9 months older than I. If you come across any of them please pass on my email address - waxrose@me.com - Good luck in your search and please if you can let me know either way

RE: RE: Mother's Brother And Sisters

Hi Sandie, Another thought came to mind after I posted last coments, my uncle's parents lived opposite them in Wellington and when you cross the road from number 27 the number 34 can't be far away, I will just check GoogleMaps and see how far. BTW I quoted circa 1950 as birth year and on reflection I think it would have been earlier not much but a close to 40's.... Google puts 34 up by Old Down Road (where The Dell used to be but is now all houses) and my aunt's place was about 3 houses down from there --- might be lucky --- If you are on site (ie Andover) I hope the council is more forthcoming coz all I got re Mayor Kenneth Butcher was a silent treatment and quotations from the Privacy Act

John

RE: RE: Mother's Brother And Sisters

I do not know if you are still hunting on the net but you may have seen the new (to Australia) series Downton Abbey, its series producer is Liz Trubridge, too much of a coincidence I believe but I am getting no response to my queries. I am due to spend a few days in UK on December 2011 (eldest son marrying an Elgin girl) so I intend to round off the trip with a drive through London/Winchester/Andover/Eastleigh and be a tourist for a few days and try and meet - well to be honest - anyone Regards John Scott waxrose@me.com Brisbane, Australia.
