Baldwin's Butchers Shop

Ewell, High Street 1924

I have this photograph on the wall as it reminds me of my dad, Arthur Edward Elson. He was born in Mill Lane in 1914 and worked as a 'butcher's boy' for Baldwin's which is just visible on the right of the photo.
He delivered meat to customers by bicycle which is how he met my mother, she had come down from Durham and was working for Doctor Eileen Stevenson who lived at Holmfield in Cheam Road.
He worked there until he was called up to fight in the Second World War, in fact they continued to pay a percentage of his wages to his mother Alice, my grandmother, for the duration of the War as she was a widow ...read more here

Wedding Day 1958

Ewell, Church of St. Francis of Assisi c1965

This is the church that my parents were married in, April 12th 1958. I haven't seen it since 1974, when we emigrated to Australia. Their wedding photos were taken in front of the church, with family members, many of whom are no longer with us.

Extracts From Ewell & Surrey books

Ewell, Old Church Tower and Rectory Farm 1903

Three children have been enticed by the photographer into providing a human focal point in the foreground of this picture, with the ivy-clad tower of the old medieval parish church of St Mary the Virgin beyond. The main body of this flint and stone church was demolished in 1848, leaving the tower to serve as a funeral chapel until the start of the 20th century.

Ewell, the Pond 1903

The pond is in central Ewell; the wall separates it from the grounds of Bourne Hall on the right. Note the top-hatted driver of the horse conveyance in the centre of the picture, and the horse in the pond on the left.

Ewell, the Pond 1903

The pond is situated at the junction of the London and Chessington Roads. The waters emerging from the springs here are reputed to be the coldest in England, a feature probably much appreciated by the two horses seen in this photograph. On the far side of the pond a smartly-attired coachman in a top hat has diverted from the foot of the High Street to allow his equine companion, and the wheelrims of his trap, to cool in the water. Closer to the camera, an elderly groom restrains another horse. The wall, with a flint and shell archway with Doric columns, allows the waters to emerge from the grounds of Bourne Hall into the pond, before they flow on to the Hogsmill River.

Ewell, Ruxley Splash 1907

A marvellously posed picture of the Ruxley watersplash, at Ewell on the Hogsmill River. It was situated in Ruxley Lane, now the B284. Note the old footbridge and causeway to the left of the picture, now replaced by a bridge.

Ewell, Ruxley Splash 1907

Named after Rokesley, a 15th-century owner of the surrounding farmland, Ruxley Lane links the roads from Ewell to Chessington and to Kingston, and crosses the Hogsmill River south of Tolworth. But in the early decades of the 20th century, this small footbridge and the adjacent, spectacular ford provided the only means of passage across the water at this point.
