Those Were The Days
I lived in Union St flats, Amanda Ave. I will never forget my roots, and the best childhood you could wish for. There were 7 of us best friends, we played out all day and night without a worry in the world. Kick can, raillivo, marbles, british bulldog, hopscotch, you name it we played it. Best neighbours in the world, used to play on Mancunian Way, when they was building it - great time. Lived there from 1952 till 1969, the shops, factory's, pubs and the park - can't beat them. My heart still belongs to Amanda Ave, Ardwick lol. I'm 60 now, if I could have one wish - to be a child again from Ardwick xx
Fond Memories
My name is Peter Palmer, I grew up on Higher Ardwick between 1948 and 1961. I have fond memories of the place. Attended St. Aloysius School. Remember the day nursery on Union Street when I was just a toddler. Belle Vue just up the road, great for a Saturday morning's excursion. The museum at the top of Brunswick Street was ok too on a wet weekend. I also remember how quiet it used to be on a Sundays there..... No shops open them days.
1954 Onwards
I attended Ardwick secondary modern school for girls, many of my friends lived in Ardwick we would all walk to school together, on the way home hot vimto at the cafe so I got to know the area well. Of course we visited the Apollo cinema and the Hippodrome, then the Court School of Dancing in the Apollo building, Hyde Roadside chips from the chippy on the way home.
1964 till 1967 I worked at Union Street day nursery in Ardwick.
Lancashire memories
Montgomery House YMCA Hall of Residence
I was a student here between 1966 and 1969 and loved the place! Although it was an all-male Hall of Residence we organised events with other Halls from the University and Colleges. I was the social secretary for my Hall and got to meet some lovely people; although it is now more than forty years later I still remember very fondly Gill Bagshawe, Rosemary Smith, Lil Howie, Val Hugill, Gail Willson who were all nurses nearby!
I organised weekend trips to the Peak District and Lakes and sometimes hired entire youth hostels to accommodate our groups. Many of the residents of my Hall were from overseas and I recall some from Greece, Russia and Aden in particular. I spent three happy years studying and working plus a lot of partying too!
1946-1958, 46 Wood Street.
My mother was Jane Anne Bowcock, father James Bowcock. I had one brother, Brian, and two sisters, Mavis and Susan. I went to Lloyd Street Junior School and then City Road Secondary School. I used to go to Hulme Lads Club and Leaf Street Swimming Baths. If anybody out there remembers the Bowcocks I would love to hear from you.
Hulme 1967-68
My maiden name was Elaine Coxon and I lived in the Wellington Hotel on Stretford Road, Hulme. I loved living in Hulme at that time, before the new houses came into being, the little 2 up and 2 down where everyone knew each other. I used to go to the Hulme Library to do my homework with my friend Elaine Pargeter, we used to play on the "Crofts" as I knew them, the area where they had pulled down the old houses. I had no choice but to move to Worsley because they were pulling down the pub where I had lived for so long! I remember we used to catch the 42 bus to Belle Vue and spend the whole day there, it cost tuppence on the bus and I took ten bob with me and it lasted all day! What times they were. I have lost contact with all the people I knew back then. If anyone knows me, please get in touch, I am on FB so... Read more
The Bowcocks
Just a line to say that I remember Brian Bowcock I was in the same class at Lloyd Street school and my cousin Brian Foulkes lived at 44 Wood Street.
