School Holidays in Wartime Shutford, nr Banbury, Oxon.
My earliest memories of Shutford date back to around 1944, when as an eleven year old schoolboy I spent summer holidays with my grandfather Fred Turner (son of plush weaver Amos Turner), who at that time lived in Weald Cottage. Grandfather Fred was my mother's father, and my mother would bring myself and my two sisters, Shirley and Pamela, to spend part of the summer holidays in Shutford. We had a number of relatives in Shutford in those days and we were living in north London during the war, so a visit to Shutford gave us all a break. My father would spend a small part of our holiday with us and had arranged a train journey that got us to Banbury without having to travel into London to the station at Paddington! An Under-Housemaid at Williamscot House
When my Great Aunt Phyllis Ivy Jarrett left school at the age of 13 (about 1918), she joined the domestic staff at Williamscot House, where she was an 'under-housemaid'.
Phyllis used to send photos home to her mother. These give the impression that life in service was not too bad for Phyllis. One photo shows the staff sitting outside the back door: there's the Butler, the Cook (Mrs Collins), Kitchen Maids Ivy and Amy, Parlourmaid Muriel, and even Susie the dog.
In a later photo, the same staff are standing on the immaculate lawn of the big house. The Butler is wearing a typically low-waisted, 1920s style dress and cloche hat, looking like the 'Lady of the Manor'; the Parloumaid sports a top-hat and tails, while Phyllis is looking very mischievous in a chauffeur's uniform, complete with peak-cap and jodhpurs.

St Johns Priory (Private Girls School)
I was a pupil at St Johns Priory, and whilst I did not appreciate it at the time, it was an amazing start in life. The Nuns were incredibly strict so we all studied hard. Our classes were really small, by the time I left at the age of 11 I think we only had about 10 people in the year/class.
The two Sisters that I remember have since died (I did get in contact with them only to find one had passed away and the other was quite poorly and later died). I have visited their grave, they are buried together, at the Convent in Birmingham.
St Johns Priory has an amazing history and I have purhcased a book which details how the school was founded etc.
My Time at This Church
I was christened at this church. I was also a choir boy there. I was a choir boy there from 1965 to 1967.
1963 Till 1971
I used to go to this lovely swimming pool. I learnt to swim and dive here, and used to dive off the spring board.
St Mary's Church
I was confirmed at St Mary's in 1970 and I was also married in this church in 1979.
Fishing on The Canal
I used to fish here quite a bit in the late 1960s. It was not far from the bus station.
