Allen Priests Mill
In 1969 I worked at Allen Priests Mill as a twister, I also did winding. On my first day I was taught to twist on a Prince Smith, Ann was the name of the person who taught me, I have forgotten her surname, she had a friend called Christine. I then worked downstairs on the Alma machines, with Linda Dutton, Sadie Wheelwright, Pat and Carol. Our foreman was called Lewis Chapman, he died in 1971/72, and Dennis took over from Lewis. Some other people I knew were Doreen Dyson who had a daughter called Maxine, Bernadette who was Irish, we became friends, I was also a friend to Linda and Sadie. Sadie had an accident in 1972/73 when she lost part of a finger, she retired shortley after that, she had a sister who also worked at Allen Priests, her name was Ruth. I used to live at 3 Bath Street opposite Allen Priest houses. I left Allen Priests in 1974 after getting married and moved to Scotland. If I... Read more

Happy Times
I lived not very far from Beaumont park and as a child I used to go there along with friends, my sister or my brother, I remember the huge slide that was there and the long metal rocking horse that was on the field. The park was great to visit even at winter times, but the best was the summer when the ice cream shop was open and also the large paddling pool was available. Walking down the wide pathways you would come across the stone lions and the lovely monkey trees. The park will always have a special place in my childhood memories.
Boiler Man
My dad Norman Kay, was Boilerman at the hospital during the year of the Queen's Coronation. I was seven years old and I remember the rain, we had our party in a house. Dad was born at Golcar .
Birth Place
Huddersfield is where I was born.
History of Netherthong
I am currently researching and writing a history of Netherthong and I have well over 200 photos and other ephemera. I have started numerous chapters relating to such subjects as schools, parish council, churches, sport, entertainment, clubs and activities, role of Netherthong lads in the war and as further information becomes available I add, revise and update. Because NT in the early days was a very small village, there is little information available. One of my ongoing chapters is titled Odds and Bods and I list it below. Whilst writing and researching this history I kept coming across items of information that were either entertaining, informative or relevant to the times that NT was growing up in but they didn't seem to fit comfortably into any of the main chapters. This chapter seems as good a place as any for them. One feature of the Holmfirth Express was how it combined news both local, national and international along with sport and detailed reports of social activities. In the early days it was... Read more
