Aminster Secondary Modern School

Castle Hill 1902

I have some rather bad memories of school years spent at this school, because I was a rather shy and insecure child so I tended to be the victim of the school bullies. One I remember very vividly was a Maureen Ashby, I also remember a Miss Wallis as the domestic science teacher, who used to make me feel very nervous and clumsy because I was left handed. I work in a school now and love all the kids to bits, even the very shy ones who can come across as disruptive, but only need understanding, something old-fashioned teachers never gave. My maiden name was Darke, and I had older families, 2 brothers + 2 sisters, that attended this school before me. Mr Tolchard was only head for my first year, he was then followed by a Mr White. The one teacher I do remember as being so kind was a man whose name I cannot remember but he taught English, he would help me through many a difficult term, especially after I had spent long spells in hospital. His advice to me I have never forgotten: "Treat every day as special and always remember we are all the same in God's eyes".

RE: RE:Aminster Secondary Modern School

Hello Lorraine,I was at school about the same time as you and I think the English teacher that your talking of was CPT William Smith,a very tall man who used to stride his legs apart while leaning on his desk. The other teachers I remeber were Mr Stock (2nd head)Spud Wiscombe(RS)Mrs Cockburn(Music) Dicky Andrews(RE) Rubberneck Haymonds ?(Maths) Vickery(PE) and Barns (science). They were good times. Kind Regards Toby Dawson (Spain)

RE: RE: Aminster Secondary Modern School

I was at Axminster School from 1948 to 1952, I think Toby, rubberneck was Brian Hayman, Mr Stock, Mrs Cockburn, Dicky Andrews & Norman Barnes were there then, we also had Ted Denham who went to Uplyme Junior School as head, we also had Miss Jennings for cookery, Miss Polly Wood and Miss Biggs, with of course Herby as head. A lot of pupils from those 4 years still live in East Devon. We also had a Mr Mason who came from the RAF, Mr Jones and a Miss Barclay. I live near Lorraine's sister Carol Long, in Millwey Rise. Some times were good, some not so good. All the best, B P Downton.
