Eden Hall School

I was sent to Eden Hall as a 9 year old as my asthma was causing me to miss school. My brother Brett Imray had gone a few years earlier and I have awesome memories of the school and Bacton. I only stayed about 18 months. It was such a quiet village place and I remember spending many summer evenings after school hours running around the beach and climbing around the cliffs. My mother would come and spend weekends staying close by and we would go out for the day with them. My brother finished all his senior school years there and left in 1979. Sadly in 1982, whilst working as a male nurse, he suffered an asthma attack whilst living away from home and died at 21 years of age. I reside as an Australian citizen, having taken up my mother's citizenship in Penrith, NSW Australia and would love to correspond with anyone that may remember my brother and I. Sadly, I finished my schooling back at Chelmsford, in hindsight,... Read more

Time Spent at Eden Hall Special School

I remember arriving at the school not knowing anybody and being told I was on holiday. It turned out to be a long holiday, 6 years. I remember some of the people by their first names, not their surname, and the staff, including the head teacher and wife who had a boxer dog. Again it would be good to hear from people from all those years ago. Is the school still standing? I have some memories I can tell if anybody wants to chat. I also remember a Mrs Klein, the music teacher, Trevor Milbourne, Jackie, Two Christines, Elaine, Raymond McClure, Anne who had a tube in her throat, Stefan Kasprazak who played the drums in the group, Peter Brown.

Amazing Bacton

I am an artist from Belgrade, Serbia and I loved Bacton at the first sight. The most wonderful Christmas of my life was in Bacton! I will never forget it! My friend has lived in Bacton, so I had to see that magic place, Bacton. I spent a few months there...walking on the sea shore... in such a fantastic atmosphere that I will remember as long as I live! My favorite birds is the white dove. It is a symbol of inner peace for me, and I used to paint white doves all the time on my paintings. But in real I had never seen white doves. The first time I have seen them was in Bacton...five lovely white doves in their nest on the top of the house. It was a very mystical and magic sight for me! So, Bacton is in my heart all the time. I do hope I will come back, and take a walk again in the early morning, watching the big waves of... Read more

My Caravan Holidays at Bacton

I can remember many happy holidays at Bacon, staying at a caravan site (I can't remember which one). At the site shop there was an Alsatian dog called Elva, I suppose she was the guard dog. I loved climbing down the steps etched out of the cliffs, to the wonderful sandy beach below. I would fish for shrimps, and enjoyed the white sand and swimming in the sea. For our tea, Mum, Dad and I would walk to the village and queue for our fish and chips at the local "chippie". I revisted Bacon in 1967, with a school friend. Our first holiday without our parents. We stayed in a cabin, and I can remember going to the local Pub. They were starting to build the oil rig, and we met some American's working on the rig, but that then changed( in my opinion) the wonderful beach. Now living in New Zealand, I often wonder what Bacton is like now. If anybody reads this I would love to hear from them. Sue... Read more

St Peters Court

I played football for Bacton Primary School against St Peter's Court, a window was broken! The headmaster was always walking to Walcott (where I lived) and wore plimsoles.

Eden Hall

I was at a home for sick kids, Eden Hall, I had some happy moments there.

St Peter's Court Bacton

I was a boarder at St Peter's Court Bacton when my father was posted to Palestine. I remember Sir Humphrey Fenn who was the headmaster and Rosemary his daughter. I have driven passed several times during the summer months over the past few year and decided one day to knock on the door and met Christopher. I was a little disapointed to find that he did not share any memories. Unfortuneately I cannot remember any of the other schoolchildren by name. I was there for about a year. All I can remember was that we moved from the previous boarding school at Mundham (I think). I seem to remember being happy there and having to listen to classical music from an old Grundig record player once a week in a rather large sitting room.
My name is John Jenkins and when I retired from the RAF in 1978 I remained in Norfolk and retired at the age of 65.
I would... Read more

St Peter's Court

I was a boarder at St Peter's Court, Bacton, Norfolk in the 1950s and a few years ago I found Rosemary, the daughter of the headmaster, in a village nearby. Sadly no one else had left their names so that some of us old boys could find each other. I wish I could find some old boarders but it seems unlikely. I can only remember a boy who came from Mundesley or North Walsham whose father ran a building firm. Lovely to find this site, thanks. Since this first memory I have had contact from an old boy in Aussie thanks to The Francis Frith Collection.

ref W400054. This photograph shows a Vauxhall Viva. I think this photo is dated between 1967-70, probably nearer 67 as the caravan seen centre left is my grandfather's and that partiucler van, a Marston, was not bought until 1967. The PO was run by Mr & Mrs Murphy. I spent most summer weekends and annual holidays at Walcott from 1957 to 1970.

The old showman's type caravan at the back of the field was owned by a Mr Palmer and was still on the site in 1970 when we left (the site was being sold). Mr Palmer had a small dinghy in which he used to go fishing out to sea, having launched from the beach with Mr Bishop from another van on the site. The boat could have been Bishop's, I'm not sure.

Floods of '53

Was 7, lived at 'Ocean View' opposite Ostend Road, the sea never reached our house. I remember seeing the total devastation the following day. My adopted mother, Doris Bean, worked at the Stores for Chippy and Bill Murphy, and after the Village Hall was built, helped run the Dances and Whist Drives. I left Walcott in '66, but returned to live again in 2010. I intend to start a village history group, and have already collected material. Parade Cafe & Amusement Arcade

The Parade Cafe & Amusement Arcade is on the left in your picture, My Father bought it for 5000.00 in 1956. It stayed in the family until my brother-in-law Billy Burrows sold it in the mid 1980's. Business-wise it was a goldmine, in those days it was one of the safest beaches on the coastline for 7 miles in each direction. They were still finding land mines all along the East Coast from World War II, and Mundesley had the only good beach access. Great days for my family.

Hotel Continental - 1973/74

My dad worked in the Hotel Continental around 1973/74. He met my mother there and he has told me many stories about this beautiful hotel. He visited again recently and by all accounts it is in a very sorry state. That is why it is so nice to find this fantastic picture of the place. By all accounts, the large conservatory was the dining room. If anyone has any memories of the Hotel Continental then I would be grateful if they would post them here.
