Memories of Avon

Petty France Cottages

I was born in the middle cottage out of three which the Duke of Beaufort owned back those days, now they have been modernised to a high standard and are privately owned. I used to spend a lot of my time in the Seven Mile Woods just the other side of the road, and when I was older I helped out on the farm which was just behind my house (Petty France Farm). As I got older I then had lots of friends in Hawkesbury Upton which is just over a mile up the road. They were good days when things were so much different to the way we live now! I could stay and write on here all night but at work so must crack on. Terry Hewer terryhewer@blueyonder.co.uk

Willcox's And Bennet's And A Jones?

Is there anyone out there who can help me with a family that I believe lived in Old Sodbury House at the 1901 census? At this time William Charles Willcox 52, lived with Mary J Jones 40, who later became Willcox. Annis Louise Willcox was 15, and later married Frederick William Bennet. They are all buried in one of the Old Sodbury churchyards, which I'm yet to visit. William died in 1916, Mary died in 1954, Annie died in 1941 and Frederick died in 1962. Thankyou so much if anybody has anything to send me. Sorting out a family is hard work, but I love it.

HARRY CROCKFORD And Family

I would be grateful for any information, photos or transcriptions from tombstones of the Crockford family; in particular any related to Harry Crockford and his 17 children. He was born about Sept 1852 Petersfield (East Meon) died between Apr & Jun 1942 Sodbury, Gloucestershire. He married Hannah Kent, Feb 1873 Langrish, Hamps. Harry, wife Hannah, and son Vincent Greystone Crockford were buried at Old Sodbury I believe.

I would appreciate any information about these people and their descendants - contact MrPeterMorris@Yahoo.com

The Loveridge Gypsy Family

Does anyone remember the Loveridge Gypsy family that were in caravans on a small site in Tormarton? They were my relatives that I lost touch with. I would love to trace them. There was Priscilla and her husband and their two children one of which was Janet my cousin. I stayed there one night in the caravan and they made me so welcome. They had very little but they shared it with me. I have never forgotten it. I live in Sussex now. Does anyone know what happened to the Gypsies there. Is the site still there I wonder. I am tempted to take a long drive to research it all out as I am doing my family tree... The family use to deal in scrap metal and they clothed themselves from jumble sales. My email is lindajhopkind@hotmail.com if you know or remember this family please get in touch. My grandfather's name was Abraham Loveridge and... Read more

Hawkesbury Boy 1969-1973

Brian Halse - lived in Hawkesbury Upton from 1969 - 1973. Drank in both the Beaufort and the Fox. Married local girl Fiona Dix at St Mary's Church, got divorced a couple of years later, smartest move she ever made.
Fred & Vera Trinder ran the Beaufort in those days, spent many an enjoyable evening getting drunk with my mates in the back room.
I'll try and remember some names, my apologies if I miss you out, it was a long time ago .... Richard & Anthony Leonard, Cyril & Phil Davidson, Mervyn Dix, Steve & Dave Stinchcombe, Buster Watts, Martin Beezer, Norman Hewer, Roland Starling, Bob James and many many more.
If you remember me, then get in contact, I now live in California, USA, my email address is halsebrian@yahoo.com.
