Growin Gup in Bamford

Hi, I am now 57 years and live in Los Angeles, USA. I just felt homesick and nostalgic and discovered this site. Growing up in the 50s and 60s in Bamford was wonderful (not that I felt that then). I've lived in several countries in my life, the older I get the more I relate to my childhood, my family, my friends. My parents, John and Joan, have recently passed. I grew up on Brentwood Road and still remember most of the families and kids, we all went to the same school as our parents. I love my memories of long summer days playing soccer at the rec, going for walks up Joan Lane and around Thornhill. If anyone from that time reads this I would love some contact.

RE: RE: Growin Gup in Bamford

My parents were married at St John the Baptist in 1966. My mother was born in Bamford and was one of the large Greenhough family members who used to live in the village, most of whom are now buried within the Church grounds. She also lived on Brentwood Rd as a child from 1943 until around 1955 when she went to boarding school in Blackpool. My grandparents used to run two shops, one in the village and one further up the hill, away from the village. They left Bamford for the Isle of Mann in the late 1970s. My grandfather died in 1983 and my grandmother in 1987. Both were cremated and their ashes buried on St John the Baptist grounds. The family were regular church attendees and the family used to make up a majority of the Church choir in the earlier part of the 20th century. My grandfather left a sum of money to the Church's restoration fund and the church chose to replace the old wooden shutters with glass on the windows either side of the main stained glass front window. A plaque sits within the Church as a memorial to my Grandfather, Robert 'Young Bob' Greenhough. As far as I know there are now no Greenhough's living in Bamford.

RE: RE: Growin Gup in Bamford

My family have lived on Brentwood since the houses were first built. My nan and grandad, Charles and Winifred Ashmore, lived at no. 28 with their 6 kids, Aldene, Violet, Noel, Maria, Melvyn and Janet. Noel and Melvyn still live at No. 28 though Melvyn is now terminally ill with cancer, and Janet (my mum) lives at no. 18. Still a lot of the people from the 1950s and 60s remain. Mary MCCormick lives next door to Noel and Mel with her son Anthony. Beryl across the road, Nita Fair now lives where her mum and dad used to and her mum and dad now live in the old people's bungalows where Blance Booth used to live. Bob Somerset and his family now live where Flo used to, Marion and Tyron still live on at the end as does Mary Crowther. My younger sister Michelle lives next door to Marion Bough and Steven and Brian Worthy next door to her. I was in Brentwood just 5 minutes ago visiting my mum Janet. The road still looks pretty much the same, just more cars now. If you remember the Ashmore family I have pictures on my facebook of how they all look now. I hope these names have brought back some good memories for you.

Best wishes

A.C.

RE: RE: Growing up in Bamford

I remember the hazy days of warm summers in Bamford so very well and of course in particular Brentwood Road which is where we grew up, we moved into no 22 in 1962 and as the family grew we then moved into no 1 which is where my brother Tyrone still lives with my late father's wife Marion. I don't really visit Bamford much but feel I should because I do have lots of great memories of the 1960s. How we all loved playing football and hide and seek on Brentwood, sometimes there could be up to 25 kids playing games and the mum and dads chatting with one another over garden walls (you don't see that any more). The summers were always special, with the church garden fete and the Bamford carnival, such good times and so good growing up in a community like that. I remember all the kids that formed an amazing bond of friendship, the Mcveighs, Somersets, Ashmores, Fairs, Longdens, Statons, Crowthers, Jewels, the list is endless of friends I grew up with and lost due to us all seeking a different world to explore, but it's always nice to look back and remember with such innocent joy the wonderful times of Bamford. I would love to hear from anyone of you and have a blast from the past. Regards.
