I was at the school from 1929/1939. My name is Stanley Thomas, I would like to be in touch with anyone who was there at the same time. When the Second World War broke out we were evacuated to Reigate, Surrey. I remember Reginald Boulton, David Seeley, William Lee, Cyril Seeley. If any of you are still about, please get in touch.  The head master was C L G Raynor, the house mother was a Mrs Bell of C Cottage. I now live in West Sussex. My e-mail address is classicnats@talktalk.net    Phone 01903877106.

RE: RE: Banstead Residential School, Fir Tree Road

Hello Stanley, I have mailed you directly but others may like to know that the Banstead History Research Group are publishing a new book on Beechholme, in late 2008. We also collect memories from Beechholme and if you would like to write more than is allowable on this excellent site, then do contact us via www.bansteadhistory.com or you can write directly to me at webmaster@bansteadhistory.com If you attended Beechholme you will recognise many of the photographs we have, and maybe also some of the people who have already written in to us. One person just visited Banstead from her home in California and there is a video message on our site for all ex Beechholmers.  It was recorded at Banstead Station!

I was at this school in about 1944-1947. I wonder if anyone else was there at this time? I would be very happy to hear from anyone else if they were. I have memories of the asylum nearby and the large playing fields. I can also remember the milk being delivered in actual milk churns, and also visiting the downs nearby. I did also visit the school about twenty years ago, bringing back old memories.

RE: RE: Banstead Residential School, Fir Tree Road

Hello Joseph. It appears we were both at this school at the same time, my brother and myself were there from 1945 to 1949. I was in House A and the house mother was Miss Coates. My brother was in the adjacent house which I think was House B, his name was Gerald. He's now 76 and I`m 73. While at the school I qualified for grammar school and was subsequently moved to another house which had 4 other grammar school boys. The House Mother was Miss Dalgiesh, she was an absolute dragon. I was in the Brass band which was run by Mr Lawn, I really enjoyed it. The only photogragh I have of those days is of the church choir which was run by a tall blond female. The nearest grammar school we could get entry to was in Balham which meant a lot of travelling each day. For whatever reason both my brother and myself were moved to different residential school and never met again until we both had left school. Bang went my chance of a decent education. My strongest memories are when there was a really big snow blizzard in 1947 and we were running around underneath the snow surface which had frozen over, also the railway embankment where we used to leap onto the conker trees off the side cuttings. I can't recall your name but there's every possibility we knew each other.

RE: RE: Banstead Residential School, Fir Tree Road

Hello, I tried to mail Kenneth and Joseph to say that the long-awaited book on Beechholme is now available from the Banstead History Research Group but submitting the mail failed.
