My Wedding

Curfew Tower c1955

I was born in Upney Hospital 53 years ago. My husband and myself were married at this church on October 15th 1977. It was a very nice warm day and we were lucky to have a beautiful sunset when we had our pictures taken on the steps at the back of the abbey. There were about 100 guests all standing on the steps. As we walked through the tower they rang the bells of the church. My husband and myself still live in Barking, we lived just around the corner to each other and never knew it. His mum used to see my mum with me in the pushchair and say "What a lovely little girl". Little did she know I would grow up to be her daughter-in-law! We had three children and now we are waiting for the birth of our 6th grandchild....happy days.

RE: RE: My Wedding

I loved this story. It brought back many memories. Pauline, I used to live on Longbridge Road and we played in the grounds of the church. I now live in New Zealand and I do miss Barking Town and would love to go back and have a good look around. I enjoy reading the memories. Regards, Pat West, nee Beech.

RE: RE: My Wedding

I enjoyed reading your memory Pauline. I was born in Upney Hospital too but a bit earlier than you and will be 60 in a couple of weeks time.
Although I went on to marry a guy from North London, we were married at St Margaret's like you. That was in 1970. My dad and I posed in the arch of the bell tower for photos as we entered the grounds.
I didn't know until much later that The Captain Cook pub named after the seafairing officer which next to the church grounds, was so called because Captain Cook was also married in the church. I found that out when living in central London, our local vicar called round one day and we got chatting and we mentioned where we came from. It turned out that the vicar had worked during his training, for a time at 'our' church and he later returned to Barking to be married there too! It was he that told me about Captain Cook's wedding there. I find this kind of thing totally amazing and how a total stranger can make a link and memories.
Thank you for sharing your memories with us
