The Library And Swimming Pool c1965

I have lived in Fullwell Avenue, Barkingside all my life. I was born in 1949. Who remembers where in the high road was W H Smith or Pollacks or where Sainsbury's was orginally? How about the garden centre that was opposite the old police station.  Mossford Garage was where Somerfield is now. What about Fance's the bakers? And Eastwells the greengrocers. How it has all changed but not for the better.

RE: RE: Barkingside

I used to live in Fullwell Avenue and remember the old Sainsbury's with it's marble floors and displays. Ice cream was only purchased from Rossi's and in my mind is the best tasting ice cream ever made!

RE: RE: Barkingside

I used to live in Fulwell Avenue (right down the bottom when it ended in fields). The Sainsbury's was up opposite where the swimming pool is. I remember Pither's the bakers down the other end of the high street, near by Eastwells (the greengrocers), where my mum used to work. And as for Rossi's, well there was no other ice cream! Used to walk the mile up Fulwell Avenue to just to get some. My husband comes from Ilford and swears by the Rossi's there, but at some family 'do's' some of my sisters get a tub or two from 'our' Rossis for old times sake! One of my earliest memories was of going to a circus in the field where the donkey was kept - think this was where the library was built. And oh what a childhood - playing in the bomb craters, picking bluebells from Claybury (going through the holes in the fence) and playing in the woods near the Glade - wouldn't have let my kids do any of these things when they were young! What memories!
