Nostalgic memories of Barkingside's local history

Share your own memories of Barkingside and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

My family came back from Australia in 1952. We were housed in the old R.A.F camp in Forest Rd. In the fine weather we walked across the fields that ran at the back of the camp to Failop School, Fencepiece Rd. After a year we moved to Greenwood Gardens next to the school . I was at Gearies when the rocket fell in Hatley Ave. We lived at no 9 and it was on a Monday (washing day) and the replacement windows that we had(because they were blown out when the V1 dropped in Dr Barnardos behind us) fell on my mum in the kitchen. She was not hurt because they were not glass. I understand that the V2 fell on the back door step of the house in our Ave and the lady there was hanging out the washing at the time and all they found I believe her only hand.
Late in Feb 1945 (I think it was the 25th) I was at Geary's school when during the dinner break a neighbour of my own age Sheila Solomon told me that my house had been bombed. At the time I lived at 39 Hastings Ave. The house immediately behind us was in Hatley Ave and it together with ours was severely damaged and my mother seriously injured. After the war my family emigrated to South ...see more

When I was born we lived at 8 Longwood Parade, Longwood Gardens, Barkingside. Yet when my husband took me back there two years ago Longwood Parade seemed to have gone and the houses are all numbered as Longwood Gardens. Anybody know why? Ann Hall (nee Moller)
I used to visit my grandparents (Gran and Robert Pearce) in 2 Tanyard Cottages when I was a small boy between 1949/55. I can remember the cottage next door was owned by Mr and Mrs Lindsell and their family. I also remember that at the top of the road the trolley buses went past between Ilford and Barkingside and the main gate to Dr Barnardos home was on this junction. In the opposite ...see more
