Wynton Cafe, on The Clifftops
I would love to hear from anybody that remembers WYNTON CAFE that was situated on the south cliffs at Barmston. My parents, Terry & Ida McGuire owned & ran the cafe from approx 1966 to 1970. I was just a boy at the time and have very fond memories of Barmston, the hot summers and the cold, isolated snowy winters. I remember standing and watching several bungalows and chalets disappear over the cliffs, my mum would always tell me off for what seemed to me at the time a very exciting adventure. I would go on 'expeditions' alone except for our alsatian 'Zena' and lurcher 'Sheba', and me - equipped with a catapault, a fishing line and a bag of sweets... I would walk on the cliffs or the beach to Barmston drain and just play around for hours in and around my den which was an old WW2 blockhouse which I believe is still there today.
I often go back to Barmston - I take my children and tell them of my fascinating childhood adventures. Wynton Cafe has long gone, in fact earlier this year I worked for 'Park Resorts' holiday camp at Barmston and had a walk round the old cafe site. I found the remains of the original cafe footings along with 'Tom Watsons' amusement arcades footings. I must say it really did bring a tear to my eye...
Yeah, I loved my childhood at Barmston, except for the long cold walk down to the Skipsea school bus pick up point outside the Black Bull pub! Aaahh, great days....... Tony McGuire, Bridlington, aged 44.

Both of my grandparents bought caravans on Barmston beach when I was a kid. They were there for maybe 15 years before they relocated to Sewerby. I seem to remember the present clubhouse and outdoor pool being built. I can remember the cafe, and Watsons amusements and bingo hall. The little coin operated cars you could ride on. And the big swingboat near the cafe that you made swing by pulling ropes. I seem to vaguely recall buying takeaway fish and chips but this might have been part of the cafe?
I can also remember a boatyard being somewhere near the cafe. I can recall the clifftop shop which was run by a man and wife with a Mazda car. I think they relocated to run the shop in the club/leisure centre bit for a while. The original clifftop shop had a large lean-to greenhouse on it where you could pick your own tomatoes.
I can also remember the boat slipway at the end of Sands Lane and an old bloke who hoisted the boats up the slipway. I think he was called Sid?
Just to the North side of the caravan site there were still some timber chalets/houses that were derelict and almost ready for falling over the cliff.
We used to hire those double bikes they had at the clubhouse and spend hours riding up the road and round the caravan site.
I can also remember fishing Barmston drain to the South of the caravan site and we caught flatties and eels. I also remember all the big concrete blocks on the cliff top and those that had fallen into the sea were covered with barnacles and limpets. We also played in the concrete bunkers and one still remains in the field opposite where our caravan stood.
