Memories of Suffolk

Childhood Memories

Being born in a house opposite the Angel pub in 1952, and having a family history going back over 300 hundred years in the village, I think we were a local family. Those memories of the school holiday times will last a life time. Our favourite place was the Grundle and to this day you can still see remnants of the tree huts and underground tunnells etc. When it rained hard we used to build a dam in the Grundle and then try and flood the street as there was no drain there then, only the grup as it was called. Poor old Sid Peck had a fish and chip shop on George Hill, health and safety would have a field day now, flies everywhere, but those chips always tasted good. Bernie Grofer had his shop at the bottom of George Hill, he sold firewoks to anybody but they were bloody dangerous, light them, leave them for about ten minutes then they would go off. School in Walsham

I atended primary school in Walsham from 1953 to 1955, my father was stationed at Shepards Grove. We lived in West House about a mile out of town toward Bury St Edmonds. I enjoyed my time in school there. My wife and I made a trip back to places I lived at and we went through Walsham and I remembered most of the places.
I remember catching sticklebacks in the stream by the school. Going to the crash site of one of the jets from the base. It was just past where the school is now.
The school had pictures of the archery class, I was in one of those pictures and I wonder if any one might have a copy of it.
I loved the time I spent there.

Evacuee In The Second World War

I was evacuated to Walsham le Willows during the Second World War, at 9 Palmer Street. I stayed with a Mrs Baker who we kept in touch with until she died. I would be interested to hear from anybody from that time, as I intend to return to Walsham later in the year.

Service Memories

I served as an SAC general mechanic in the general workshops for most of my NATIONAL SERVICE.

Visit of Krustchev

I was stationed at Honington and was on the station guard of honour. I remember the visit of Kruschev during the Cold War. Being in air traffic control, the tower approach windows were covered. Kruschev was only permitted on the local balcony. Have tried to find photos and write-ups without success.
