Hollingwood Life
Hi, we moved to Hollingwood in 1977, from Grangewood. It ain't changed much though. I went to Hollingwood infants and juniors. Does anyone remember these teachers: Miss Maisie Bond, head, Miss McGregor, Miss Binney, or juniors: Mr Beckett, Mr Middleton, Miss Shipgood, Mr Watkinson? There was an eccentric piano teacher but I can't think of her name, I know she stank of moth balls though.
Anyone Know of A Francis Evans
I am doing my family tree. Francis Evans was my great-great-grandfather, he was born around 1802 and married a Hannah in 1828, they lived in Staveley until he died in 1876. I am trying to find out my great-great-grandmother's maiden name Hannah ..?, Francis Evans's wife, they had a daughter called Hannah also, she was born 1830/31 and married a George Bates in Staveley, he was my great-grandfather. If anyone knows of any information of the Evans/Bates family it would be appreciated. I do have lots of information about the Bates family, but Hannah who married Francis is a puzzle to me. Smiths Army Uniform Factory
Just wondering if there is anyone out there who used to work in this factory? I got a job there in 1970 aged 15, I used to work on a felling machine and I loved it. I used to sit and sew all the side seams on this twin needle machine. Is the factory still there and where was it exactly?
Bolsover Castle
I remember I used to visit this castle sometimes and I remember digging a small hole in the mortar and putting a penny in, then covering it back up. I did intend to go back years later to see if it was still there but somehow never got round to it. I lived in Renishaw at the time and moved away in 1971 to Tyneside where I still live. I am comming back in the summer to do a nostalgia trip.
Brimington
I moved to Brimington aged 2 in 1947 when my parents had the shop at 81 Station Road. I went to Brim Boys School and left in 1962 to join the Halifax Building Society in Corporation Street Chesterfield. In 1968 I married Pat Goddard from Ashgate and we lived at Newbold until 1971. Probably the most famous pupil I knew was John Hickton who went on to play for Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesborough and his brother Roy went to Arsenal. My parents retired from the shop in 1974 and my dad died the following year. My mother, Janet, is still alive aged 95 (in 2010) but blind, deaf and suffering with dementia.The shop next door was run by Jack and Edna Gascoyne and was a fish and chip shop. Edna is still alive and lives on the Isle of Wight. I remember a Youth Club at the school and I was there the night President Kennedy was assasinated. I think Jack Rossington who lived in Calow was the leader. The girls from... Read more
Army Uniform Factory, Staveley
Yes, I remember this factory and hated it. Every day I sewed buttons on army garments, how boring! It's no longer there, in its place was a car sales building - now changed to a store that sells reduced products. The terraced houses that once stood on Inkersall Road have also gone. Moving further up, you will find the Drill Hall where once entertainment was held there, live bands etc.. Now it is used for a number of things, table tennis is taught there, where potentially 'up and coming' stars for the future learn this sport. The Foresters pub is still standing, but no longer called 'The Foresters', shame because it was part of 'Staveley's History'. The Angels Inn, also stands in its orignal place but sadly looks nothing like it use to do, inside and out there have been too many alterations. So many things have happend and changed in this historic place of Staveley, I remember so many things which would take to long to put into words.... Read more
Brim Boys School
This school was the eptitome of a 1960s and 1970s style working class English school. If you've ever seen the school scenes in the film 'Kes' in which a young boy rears a baby kestrel then you will have seen life at "Brim boys".
Some teachers didn't want to be there and made sure we knew it, most kids didn't want to be there and made sure the teachers knew it.
There were some good teachers, and some very bad ones ...
The teachers I can remember are: Headmaster Kelly. Teachers Wood (woodwork), Sharpe (Geography), Clarke (dep head - Maths), Bailey (Tech drawing), Croft (Rural studies), Lane (History) and a miriad of student teachers and temp staff over the years.
I eventually bought myself an education to make up for the wasted years I spent there.
