Barry Island
I was born and bred Barry Island. My mother and father had a fish and chip shop under the Western shelter. I can remember wonderful summer days, playing on the sands and making friends with children from the valleys. They thought my life wonderful! Can anybody remember the Gwalia cafe built on the rocks at Nells Point and the swimming pool below it that filled up at high tide? Oh such happy days! Mary Morgan (nee Lewis)

I do remember "Irene's Fish Bar" and if my mother and father were still alive I bet they would have known her. I have not heard of "Grandma's tea" though. I do wish you all the best in tracing your family tree and feel free to drop me an e-mail anytime.

I remember the Gwalia and used to buy chips, lived on the island and went to school there. Swam in the little pool, cut myself on the rocks regularly. I remember the Wembley cafe near the station too, a Mrs Mitchell used to run it I think. I remember the bottle bank and collecting bottles at the end of the day for pennies. I remember the BEACH INSPECTOR too.

RE: RE: Barry Island
It must have been about 1954/5 and I remember the small swimming pool, although it seemed to be very big to me! My mother, Margie Overtreet, used to take us three children to Barry Island as often as she could. One morning my two younger brothers were walking around the wall on the sea-side of the pool and both slipped into the full pool (the tide was on its way out). My frantic mother told me to get in and get them out IN MY CLOTHES! I did: but left the smallest one 'til last and he was so small he was under the water. It was the first time I was NOT in trouble for getting my clothes dirty!
