Markham's of Bascote

My husbands family were from Bascote. His ancestor Edwin Markham moved there as an ag labourer in the 1870s. His wife Maria died shortly after, and he married again. He had very many children, and used to drink at the Fox and Hen pub - the landlords were witnesses at his wedding! Sadly his cottage, by the pub, has... [more]

Aunt Tilly, Sussex Cottage, Harbury, Warks

As a child I would visit Aunt Tilly and stay during my school holidays, I remember she had a well in the garden, it was near All Saints' Church. I only remember Aunt Tilly being on her own. She was my grandfather's sister, born Mary Matilda Southam in 1863 in Ladbroke, Warks. Later she was a domestic servant in Long Ittchington... [more]

The Southam Family

My great-grandfather William Southam was born in 1829 in Catesby in Northamptonshire. He married Eliza Green, born Wormleighton, Warks. They lived in Ladbroke, Warks, in a cottage next to the School House that still exists but is now a private house. They had children: William 1857, Elizabeth 1860, Mary Matilda 1863, Albert 1870 and George 1870 (Ttwins), and Frederick 1873. Any... [more]

George Goode

George Goode who was born at Wappenbury in the 1840s was one of the builders who worked constructing this church. He was my  great grandfather on my father's side of the family. His daughter was Ellen Louisa Goode who married Thomas Pratt. He was once an officer at the Reformatory at Weston under Wetherley. He later became a master baker and... [more]

Wilkins of Priors Hardwick

If anyone has knowledge of the Wilkins family of Priors Hardwick who lived at Church End in the 1800s, I'd love to hear from you. My husband's ancestor Mary Wilkins was born there in 1820 and bore a daughter (Eliza) out of wedlock in 1840. The child lived with her grandparents in the village, while Mary went on to marry Michael... [more]

Happy Childhood

I lived with my grandma Elizabeth (Lizzie) Bignell at No 10 Ten Cottages from 1943 to around 1948. The houses were Estate owned (and still are) and my grandad Robert Bignell worked at the manor house first as a shepherd and then in his later years as a gardener. My mother was "in service" at a large house in the village... [more]

Grandfather

I have no personal memory of Fenny Compton. However it was the birthplace of my grandfather, Henry Charles Draper. He was born I think in 1866 or thereabouts.
The only thing he told me about Fenny Compton was that at the age of 9 years his mother received a note from the school master that Henry need not attend school any... [more]

Leamington Spa Town and City Memories

The River Leam and All Saints' Church from the suspension bridge. On the left, the high walls at the rear of the gardens give an indication of the flood problems associated with living on a river.

Leamington Spa Town and City Memories

Mrs Hitchman, widow of Dr Hitchman, donated the site for this church together with a large sum of money. St Mary's was built between 1877 and 1878 by John Cundall in brick with a prominent steeple. The interior is brick-lined. The tower was a mere 75 feet high and has been cemented over. In 1875 the old three-decker pulpit was removed and the font re-located. The horse and carriage gives a tranquil... [more]

Rugby Town and City Memories

To the west of Old Quad (above, 72159) lies Old Big School, surmounted by School House dormitories. In the shallow recess stands a pump which was used by the boys to collect their washing water until washrooms and indoor toilets were installed in 1922. The lozenge-shaped washroom windows can be seen (centre, 72159) on the south side of Old Quad. Cloisters... [more]
