A few buildings on the left survive, but the rest have gone, apart from the Abbey pinnacles in the distance. Bombs and demolition saw them off: the left side was rebuilt in the 1960s, and the right side was replaced by the dire Mall shopping centre in 1971. The tower was the Georgian St James's church of 1768, whose blitzed ruins were finally demolished in 1957.

My Great Great Grandparents were William and Elizabeth Pratt. In the 1880s William and his family had lived and worked on the Longleat Estate, William was the Head Gardener at that time. In 1891 they moved to Bath, and sadly William died there in 1892, and on his death certificate it stated that he died at 24 Southgate Street.
