Belleville School

A Memory of Battersea.

A lady writing on here mentioned a couple of places in Battersea that bring back memories. First of all, she mentioned Meyrick Road. I never lived there, but my mum and dad did when my mum was carrying me. My mum and dad were Mr. and Mrs.Fomes, Alfred (Alf) and Olive. I believe they were evicted for being overcrowded! I believe they had my Grandfather who's name was Middleton and her two single sisters Sally, known as Alice and Esther. I believe there was a family named Goff. I don't know how it's spelled. It could have been Gough. This must have been 1951 since I was born shortly after this in September. Something else that jogged my memory was that the same lady went to Belleville school, as I did. Miss Hodges was the Headmistress. We'd seen her on television at Wembley at a girl's hockey international! I don't know who's telly it was since I don't think we had one of our own at the time. We were living at Beauchamp Road. My mum would walk me to school and we'd pass a sweet shop in Webb's Road where she'd buy me Jamboree bags etc.
Going back to Meyrick Road. My mum and dad rescued a golden Labrador that was being ill-treated. They called him Peter.
I had a school-mate who belonged to the Boy's Brigade. They met at a church on Northcote Road on a corner opposite the Road that led up to Belleville school. If it's the same church I see it's now called The Dolphin School. How times have changed!
From Beauchamp Road we moved to what I think was called East Hill Estate off St. John's Hill. The block we lived in was called Whitehaven House. It could be reached from Usk Road which led down to York Road. They filmed some scenes for Up the Junction in the neighbourhood. The catering wagon was parked on Usk Road adjacent to the railway bridge. The train line was level with our front door on the first floor of the block. The other side of the block was reached from Harbut Road. You went down Plough Road past The Granada Cinema. Incidentally, as the film had been filmed in the area they held the WORLD PREMIERE at the Granada Clapham Junction!!!

Comments & Feedback

I have been very interested in this article which brings many memories. I also was in Boys Brigde at the Northcote Road Baptist Church on the corner of Northcote and Wakehurst Roads. As a point of correction, the church is still there, alive and well. I have been in membership for 65 years ne am now the lay Pastor. Dolphin School only rent the building Monday to Fridays and the church are the landlords. I was at Belleville School 1950 to 1958.
