Nostalgic memories of Battersea's local history

Share your own memories of Battersea and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

Tips & Ideas

Not sure what to write? It's easy - just think of a place that brings back a memory for you and write about:

  • How the location features in your personal history?
  • The memories this place inspires for you?
  • Stories about the community, its history and people?
  • People who were particularly kind or influenced your time in the community.
  • Has it changed over the years?
  • How does it feel, seeing these places again, as they used to look?

Hi. My name is Elisabeth. Just came across your post. Margaret Hillier was my god mother although sadly I don't remember her. I was born gywnne Road in battersea. Family name was Hill. Margaret must of been close to my mum and dad for them to ask her.
Went to St George’s school, had a best friend called Jennifer - she was always happy and laughing, but dippy - loved her, wish I could find her now, can’t remember her surname. So the school is still there but nothing like it was in our days - Head Teacher, Mr Gibbs would smoke his pipe in his office - always stank of tobacco. He was very old fashioned - would pull u by your ear. I was lucky, but a boy ...see more
Hello, I was a pupil at SWSJ during the 60's as shown above. It seems a few lifetimes ago now, in many ways that is for the good. Good group of friends, some well intentioned teachers, but on the whole I'm afraid to say I found the education I received there disappointing and in some cases brutal. I spent most of my later career in Education and this only served to confirm my view of my 'stolen' years. My thanks ...see more
I lived at 1 Randall street in the 1960s with my parents and brothers. I remember the greengrocers on the corner and a sweet shop around the corner called mr valls?. My family name was peach anyone remember us or have any memories to share.
John and Charlotte/Mary Fox lived in Sheepcote Lane, Dagnall Street, Culvert Road, Renshaw Street. They were there from about 1882 to 1939, although their daughter Daisy lived there for a longer time. Can anyone help with any memories or information about this family please? Everywhere that they lived doesn't now exist unfortunately.
Some of my brother's relatives lived in Dagnall Street until it was demolished in the 1950s to make way for a new council estate. Would anyone remember the Duffy/ Callaghan family who lived there? Are there any photos around of the street as it was and, perhaps, some of the people who lived there? Crossing my fingers. Thank you.
Hello, my mother was born in Battersea in 1920. I know she was living in Duffield Street in 1939 but it does not appear to exist on modern maps and I wonder if anybody could tell me where it was in regard to current roads. Many thanks. Sue
I am writing a history of my father and he was born in Battersea (Cologne Road) in 1916 and lived there until he joined the army in 1939. He attended Plough Road School And he was a member of the 4th Battersea Scout Troop. I am interested in connecting with anyone who knew that area in 1920{s and 1930’s and I am particularly interested in finding out the history of the houses in the Cologne Road area.
