Nostalgic memories of Battersea's local history

Share your own memories of Battersea and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

Tips & Ideas

Not sure what to write? It's easy - just think of a place that brings back a memory for you and write about:

  • How the location features in your personal history?
  • The memories this place inspires for you?
  • Stories about the community, its history and people?
  • People who were particularly kind or influenced your time in the community.
  • Has it changed over the years?
  • How does it feel, seeing these places again, as they used to look?

Lived on the Patmore Estate on Stewarts Road. Also a Grenadier on the Wandsworth Road and live on the pie and mash from Harringtons. Went to William Blake School with Jack Jones as a form master ( what a nice man ) . To avoid the French lessons I used to take the school monies upto the bank in Lavender Hill for Old Ma Jones , the secretary. The worst ones for using the cane was Gray & Barrett , especially after their pub lunch ! They were good days.
I was born in 1950 at 45 Winstanley Road, the house next door to Foxwells the bakers on the corner of Speke Road. Opposite my house was the Church of the Nazarene where I went to Sunshine corner on a Sunday. Directly opposite my house was the off license, we called it 'the old mans', and further up the road was Franks fish and chip shop where we,d buy 'six of chips'. Up by my house was Swifts sweet shop and then ...see more
I've got no personal memories of Battersea, except for visits to the fair, but my ancestors lived there throughout the last half of the 19th century until at least 1933. They all lived at various houses on Belfour Street and Everett Street, and I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who lived on those streets, and whether there are any photographs extant. Belfour & Everett Streets ran ...see more

We lived with my grandparents who owned the Southern Dining Rooms, a transport café opposite the marshalling yards, just at the end of the Dogs Home bridge. My grandmother's cooking was renowned up and down the country by the lorry drivers who regularly came to the café. It is no longer there. We ...see more

I was born in 1931 in Bollingbroke Nursing Home and lived in Belleville Road next to Belleville Road School. Our house was requisitioned and knocked down to enlarge the school and so we moved to Hayes, Middlesex, in 1937, where I lived until 1952 when I married a sailor and moved around with him. I remember racing down Belleville Road on a home made cart and narrowly missing careering into the main ...see more

From the end of WWII until Sept 1957, my parents rented rooms in one of the houses in Banbury St that still stands. I was five when we moved to Surrey but have vivid memories of the house. I remember the coal-hole in the semi-basement filled from the pavement outside up the area steps. There was a toilet next to it, but no bathroom. Before I was born, the family used a tin-bath in our ...see more
