Britain's First Photo Album is a new ten-part BBC series presented by John Sergeant on the extraordinary achievement of Francis Frith, the pioneer Victorian photographer who embarked upon a colossal project to photograph the United Kingdom during the 19th century.

Britain's First Photo Album Series Preview

Britain's First Photo Album follows John Sergeant as he retraces Frith's photographic journey through history, hoping to find the exact spots where forty photographs from The Francis Frith Collection were taken and then take his own pictures, capturing the mood of the place as it is now.

Frith's poignant photographs are further brought to life in a series of interviews as John Sergeant meets people living or working in the same places today, who tell their stories as they work to keep Britain's social and industrial heritage alive.

Watch on BBC2, every weekday at 6.30pm for two weeks, starting March 12th.

Monday's episode Newport to Gloucester
John Sergeant travels from Newport to Gloucester, learns about the restoration of Monmouthshire's canals, explores the caves under the Forest of Dean, and discovers how Britain's first state schools came into being.

Tuesday's episode Liverpool to Blackpool

Thursday's episode Hartlepool to Whitby
John Sergeant's journey continues along the north-east coast of England and begins in Hartlepool, Co Durham, where he searches for a missing rock formation. He then heads to North Yorkshire, visiting Saltburn-by-the-Sea and ending his trip in Whitby, where he meets the descendants of a family photographed by Francis Frith.

Friday's episode Chesterfield to Eyam
John Sergeant travels to Derbyshire, where he visits Francis Frith's home town of Chesterfield and ascends the famous twisted spire. He also explores a medieval country house near Bakewell and enjoys a flutter at the races in Nottingham. Last in the series.

Britain's First Photo Album - Companion Book

Contents of Britain's First Photo Album companion book The fascinating Britain's First Photo Album book offers us a unique vision of the people and places of Britain over the course of the past century and more, showing how our past is linked with our present, perhaps more closely than we realise. In the 1860s the pioneering Victorian photographer and entrepreneur Francis Frith set up a photographic publishing company with an incredible purpose - a project to make the very first photographic record of the cities, towns and villages of Britain. The images of Britain that he and the Frith company photographers took between 1860 and 1970 remain a unique and outstanding topographical record of the changing face of Britain over more than a century.

The achievement of Francis Frith and his team are celebrated in a 10-part BBC television series presented by John Sergeant, Britain's First Photo Album, illustrated with hundreds of images from The Francis Frith Collection.
