My Old School
This is a view which I know very well as it is taken from Hardgate School playground - the school that I attended from 1939 to 1946. The little cottage on the left was occupied by Peter McAlister & his family and the next property was the School House. Mr Macnab, Mr Souter & Mr Forsyth were the headmasters living there during my school years. We went there to do our gardening - a kind of "dig for victory". There has since been another house built between these two otherwise the scene is virtually the same today.
My Most Memorable Corner
I lived at Corbieton Cottage for 22 years between 1939 & 1961 and this is the view I saw as I came down the hill to go to school, to Sunday school, to Scouts, to the Kirk, to the pub, the Hall, the bowling, the dancing, the concerts et al. On the left hand side, just out of picture is the big tree under which there was a seat and we all congregated there, young & old to hear the crac and put in our own tupenceworth. The road straight in front is School Brae & goes up to the school, it is part of the Old Military Road from Castle Douglas to Dumfries. Smith's shop was on the left and Montgomery's on the right the Post Office was run by Miss Montgomery and was attached to the shop owned by her nephew Bob. Childhood Memories
Corra Castle is situated at Corra Farm, a quarter mile from Kirkgunzeon. As a child I went to collect the milk churns with my dad in the lorry and around all the other local farms and then took them into Dumfries Carnation Milk factory.
MEMORIES OF GROWING UP IN DUMFRIES
I was born in Cresswell maternity hospital at Dumfries on May 13th 1959, my name was Ann Little. My mum came from Clerkhill, one side of the Nith and my dad came from the other, Sandside. They both met in their teens one night at the Loreburn Hall dance, and from there on they got married and had four children, I am the second child and their first daughter. We were brought up and lived in Lincluden all our lives and my mum and dad still live there to this day, as do I with my husband Charles. We all went to St Teresa's primary school in Lochside, and I can remember having to walk there and back in all sorts of weather, nobody had cars in thoses days. School days were really good as you got a two course hot meal a day, also a bottle of milk every morning before you started your lessons, if you were lucky you got two bottles of milk. National Service
I was posted to Dumfries in december 1951 to do 8 weeks training in the RAF Regiment. Although it was winter and rather rigorous, I did enjoy my time there and liked the town and remember looking around in Robert Burns house. I was 18 then, I am now 78... ( 2012) and will be 79 in June. These memories have always remained in my mind ...... I am relieved to say ! John Starley.
Tracing Info For A Martin Dougan Watt
Hi I wonder if anyone can help. I have been trying to trace family of my late father. His name was Martin Dougan Watt and he was born in Newtonairds on 11th March 1931. I don't know his parents' name or if he had any brothers or sisters. I take it in his early days he was a fan of bowls. If anyone has any information I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks
