Memories of East Sussex
Parson Ancestors
My great great great granddad Samuel Parsons was buried here. You can see the headstone.
The Parsons family lived in the area over several generations and owned a farm.
The Ironmongers- The Broadbridge Family!
Currently researching my family tree and found that one of my ancestors married a William Broadbridge from Banstead and they moved to Charlwood. From 1861 - 1901 they owned/ran the Ironmongers which is now the Pine Shop!
I would love to see a photo of it when it was the Ironmongers if anyone has one, or any other info!
thanks
Charlwood Garage The Old Forge
We lived in a 400 year old cottage at the back of The Old Forge, later Charlwood Garage. My brother was born in the cottage in October 1965. I am trying to locate any photographs of the old house behind the forge or any photographs of the Forge itself. The house was pulled down in the 1980s, it had been built on a well and every time it rained we were flooded out, and eventually had to move out. My father, Dennis Creswick, was manager of Charlwood Garage. Does anyone have any photos of the site?
Little Foxes Hotel, Charlwood Road, Ifield Wood
I have been working at the above bed and breakfast for a number of years and am often asked by guests what was here originally.
Is there any one out there that remembers the original building? I believe it may have been a cottage called 'Brambles'
I know from guests who stayed here many, many years ago the original Little Foxes has developed into it's present building in a number of stages.
I am also curious as to why we are on Charlwood Road but there is another Charlwood Road running along the parimeter of the airport - I am assuming this must have been joined at one time.
So if there is any one who can throw some light on to this I would be most grateful.
The Brickyard, Charlwood
I lived at Lowfield Park Lodge on the Charlwood Road (from the long-disappeared Lowfield Heath) from about 1950 to 1962, and I believe the house was demolished around 1965(???) to make way for the expansion of Gatwick airport.
My dad and I used to fish for carp in what we called the Brickyard Pond about a 5 minute drive from (I think) the pub that Dudley Wickens' dad used to be landlord of ... or have I got it all wrong?
My parents were Mary and George and my sister's name is Anne.
Mary Bailey was Personnel Manager at BMB - also on the Charlwood road from Lowfield Heath as I recall.
Does this ring any bells?.... I would love to have info/photos of the Brickyard and its pond .....and anything else remotely connected.
Many thanks
Alan Bailey
