Old Friends
Hi, my name is Ted Holmes, I was bred up Roeburndale and attended Wray, and later Burton in lonsdale, Schools. Are any of my old friends out there?
The Vicarage, Wray
During the Second World War, my dad's uncle Rev Alfred Bell was vicar of Wray parish church. We used to travel to Wray from Blackburn where we lived for a weekend to visit them, it seemed to take forever! Uncle Alfred and Aunt Edith had a son, Raymond who was eventually vicar of St Michaels on Wyre, Eileen their daughter was slightly disabled and very involved in the church. My memory is of the bees and Uncle Alfred making honey in the courtyard of the vicarage and hand turning the barrel. In 1995 my husband and I who live in Canada returned to the UK for a visit, went to visit Wray on the VE weekend. It was quite a sight to see the village decked out with all the memorabilia, the vicarage now a private residence, the walled garden across the road, no longer there. My Childhood in Ireby
I was born in Ireby in 1955. I had two sisters and a brother, Linda Val and Paul. My mum was born in Ireby and her dad John Coates (my grandad) lived around the corner in the cottages in the middle of Ireby. I went to Leck School and then to Hornby Secondary School. Dad was born in Barrow in Furness and met Mum when she worked at the Copper Kettle Cafe in Cowan Bridge. It was the best childhood and my children like to go and visit the area. We never knew Grandma as she died when Mum was 16. I loved the village and I had lots of places iIused to go off to play in. We knew everybody in the village. We always looked forward to the shop van coming round. We had lovely picnics on the fells. We could not afford to go on holiday but we would go to Morecambe to Happy Mount Park once a year. Gibsons of Melling
I worked at Gibsons at Melling in the early 1960s, does anyone out there remember me> I remember Bob, Len and Mike Gibson, they were agricultual engineers. I think they gave over a few years ago now. Has anyone got any info?
Cowan Bridge Smithy
To the left hand side of the A65 opposite the Village Shop stands the Smithy - this is significant to me as my grandfather Thomas Glover was the village Blacksmith until his retirement. The Smithy was demolished after he retired and my parents later had a bungalow built for themselves behind where it had originally stood. Their house opposite Bronte Cottages (Bronte Cottage) had been subject to compulsory purchase and demolition for the road widening and building of the new roadbridge in the 1960's.
Bronte Cottage
The house on the right of this photo was my home - Bronte Cottage. I have been told that it was once used as the coach house for the school and certainly I remember stone flagged floors to the largest room on the ground floor. To our great sadness the house was demolished in the early 1960s for the road improvements which took place at that time. I remember that I lived close to the old bridge end but this photo made me realise how close!
