A Childhood Memory of my Introduction to Walking
The Fairy Loup was always my favourite walk as a child. In fact that picture would have been taken around the time my brother John and I along with our “Auntie Betty” and our sister Gillian in the pram used to go on our walks. Our Auntie Betty was not our real Aunt she was a Nanny who lived in Edinburgh and when she had time to herself she came to visit our parents. Not much of a holiday as she was always getting pestered to take us all for a walk around the Fairy Loup. She didn’t mind, she loved the walk and it was much more enjoyable that walking the pavements of Edinburgh. The road has been closed to traffic for a number of years now, it is still a very pretty walk and is much used by local folk, and passing visitors to the district.
Cross Keys Garage
Seeing these photographs has taken me right back in time. We moved to Canonbie in 1950. My father and uncle owned the Cross Keys Garage seen in the background of this photo next to the hotel. The two bungalows beyond were built for us and my Uncle & Aunt.{Stan & Margaret Cluley} and my mum and dad {Gordon & Iris Flitcroft}
I grew up in this village and have my own memories on my website. www.joanmac.co.uk
The photographs on this sight have evoked more memories and taken me back to a wonderful childhood. The hotel when we moved to the village was still under State Management.
The Fairy Loup was also one of our favourite walks as we went to visit our friends at Thorniewhats, [Linda Laidlaw's family]

Hoddam School
I remember going to Hoddam School when Sydney Hope was the Head Master. I remember him being a very fair and nice person. There was a Mrs McBride and a Mrs Davidson that taught there. My Name was Morrison back then. I remember going to Watson's and The Mace for sweeties. I know that the school is no longer there which I think is a shame. It has been a long time since I last was there. I live in Vancouver, Canada now.
Hoddam Primary School
I lived in Ecclefechan from 1958 to 1973. I started Hoddam primary in 1963 and left Hoddam primary school in 1970 to go to Lockerbie Academy. My teachers at Hoddam were :- Primary 1 - Mrs Hope, Primary 2 - Mrs Patterson, Primary 3 - Mrs Davidson, Primary 4 & 5 - Mrs McBride and Primary 6 & 7 - Mr Hope. We also had a music teacher called Mrs Collinge who would turn up every wednesday and give us a lesson. If I can remember correctly some of the people in the class were :- Raymond Davidson, David Cruickshank, Ricky Graham, Shona Creelman, Amy Mason, Isabel McDowell, James Sproat and Joy Little. Apologies to the others but my brain is struggling after so many years away. The dinner ladies were my gran Edith Gilmour and Mrs Dow. The Mace shop in the village was run by Ian Murray and his wife Isobel. I was their paperboy for a couple of years (1968 - 1970). There were also Casbolts shop... Read more
The Memories
I was brought up in Ecclefechan and my mother has lived there all her life. I started Hoddom Primary School in 1970. I can't remember who my P1 teacher was - it may have been Mrs Dodds. I do remember having Mrs McEwan in P2, Mrs Davidson in P3, Mrs McBride in P4, Mrs Redpath in P5 and Mr Rutherford in P6 & P7. I loved the Primary school and just missed going to the new building when it was completed in 1977. I too can remember all the shops in Ecclefechan - I also remember that there was a Fish and Chip shop at one point in the High St. There was also a shop on the corner across from Casbolts, next to the Hotel, but can't recall the name. Childhood Memories
I was brought up in Ecclefechan and attended Hoddom Primary School between 1968 and 1975.
Teachers I recall were Mrs Dodds, Mrs McPherson, Mrs Davidson, Miss Kirkpatrick (Mrs Wilson), Mrs McBride, Miss Gibson (Mrs Redpath) & Mr Rutherford. Mr Sefton visited each week for music lessons. I remember Mrs Gilmour and Mrs Dow who were the dinnerladies. School dinners arrived daily in a van in big silver metal containers of all shapes and sizes. The playground had a climbing frame (monkeybars) and a covered area to shelter in and outside toilets. There was also a covered walkway between the playground and a smaller courtyard. There was also the playground over the main road which fell into disuse later but was the scene of many an epic football kickabout over the years with two games often going on at once, one on the grass and one on the tarmac with teams of varying sizes. School Days
I moved to Ecclefechan in 1977, I attended the old school for 3 months. I was in p3 at the time. It was overwelming at the time as I had moved from a school with only 18 pupils in total. I remember having Mcferson at the time. I moved to the new school in p4 where I had Mrs Wilson. It was an exciting time for both the pupils and teachers to have a brand new school to go into. I remember Miss Brodie in p5/6 and Mrs Redpath for p7. I also remember Mr Rutherford being headmaster before he retired. Mrs Little was the school cook and Mr Sefton was the music teacher. Miss Oliver took over from Mr Rutherford as headmistress. I enjoyed all the school trips but hated drinking the milk. I lived in Ashgrove Cresent before moving to Burnswork Farm 4 miles outside the village. I remember Frasers and the Mace. I left the primary in 1981 before going onto Lockerbie Academy for 3 months before... Read more
