On the far side of the Severn, a boathouse and rowing boats indicate a swing to tourist trade. There were many small iron foundries and tin plate works a century and more ago, but cultivated riverside walks replaced them. In the background is the graceful bridge built by Thomas Telford in 1798. The population in 1930 numbered about 3000. Until 1885, when Bewdley manufactured combs, leather, malt, iron, and brass goods, the town returned one Member of Parliament.
