St Mary's Church

A Memory of Bexley.

We lived in the village from 1954-1964 before moving to Bournemouth. St Mary's Church was a centre of our social life...I went to St Mary's School in Bourne Road - now gone- also Sunday School. Later after the Evening Service we would go to the Institute opposite to Sunday night at 8. Bank Holiday Mondays the boys would organise a days hike into the countryside. Oh to be able to do that now!! I also used to ring the Church bells - there were 8 -Wednesday was practise nights how the neighbours must have hated them. Saturdays it was often weddings how we moaned when the brides were late & we had to keep going. Then of course services in Church. The Vicar was Rev Stanley Hooper assisted by the Curate Arthur who would ride through the village on his bike singing.
We made our own entertainment but I have many happy memories.

went to same school 1955-1959, lived at Gravel Hill..I remember the singing vicar on his bike....and the little sweet shop on Bourne rd , next to the reck Went to Graham rd School after ...
I now live in Christchurch Bournemouth
What a coincidence. I lived in Heathclose Avenue just the other side of Dartford Heath. In 1945 ‘till 1949 I went to the Maypole School, Bexley. Terrible school, I was so unhappy my parents had me transferred to a school in Dartford. It my youth, I used to cycle over to Bexley with the boys & go down the Dene holes. My parents never knew!
Now the coincidence is that in 1964 after I was married we too moved west to Wimborne where we are living today, in the same bungalow!
Remember the Dene Holes , also use to ride to Dartford to go over the Glory Bumps..My Dad worked at Woolage Arsenal, that closed so we moved to Corfe Mullun, along the Warham road..
