Those were the days

I was still a teenager, 17 years old and my baby brother at school at Bede Campus. I escaped the campus by virtue of it not having been completed when I passed the 11+. The town centre in Billingham was still being built, and we used to hang out in the park - John Whitehead. In those days, pleasures... [more]

schooldays

Billingham Campus School consisted of four halls - Bede, pictured in the foreground, Davy behind and Faraday furtherst away.  The fourth hall, Stephenson was about 800 yards away, not pictured.  There was a sports block with a swimming pool which can just be seen to the left of this photograph.

Cleveland memories

Greenside in the 1940s

My memories are of Greatham mainly in the 1940s. My nan and grandad , Gertrude and Joseph Peacock Wilkinson, lived in the large house called Greenside opposite the Green, and now there are many houses there. My mum Joan was born in Greatham and lived there till she left to marry Walter Bowbanks from Stockton. I had many relations at Greatham,... [more]

My early childhood

Most of the photos here are from 1955. I was a five year old boy living in Greatham in 1955 with my dad, who was the local 'Bobby', my mam and my younger brother.  We lived at 3 Egerton Terrace which was a terraced house with an outside loo and we had a bath in a tub in the kitchen. Cerebos... [more]

My Era - Stockton Revisited

I was 28 years old at the time of this photograph, living at Roseworth, with wife, Doris, and daughter, Judith, aged two. Married at St Peter's Church in 1947, with Rev'd J McGill officiating, a 'wartime' wedding really, with rationing in place, and I in a khaki uniform with royal artillery brass in place, Doris in a treasured but borrowed weddding gown... childhood

I was born in the parlour of 25 Pierson Street in 1954. My Mam's name was Margaret (Meg) and my late father was Alf (or Hank) to his mates. He worked on the tugs on the River Tees. I don't have any memories of him as he died when I was four. I remember we didn't have a lot but then... [more]

Childhood Memories of Cargo Fleet

I always remember the November 5th Bonfire on the common opposite Hilda Woodall's (I think) shop on the corner of Chester Street and next to Dents Cobblers. We all stood around the magnificent bombfire feeling quite safe as adults were also there. I also remember the clean washing hung out in the back-arches, the street games which were played, some were... [more]

Cargo Fleet, all gone now!

It is so sad that there is little of Cargo Fleet remaining, not only physically but also photographically. I have searched in vein to find photographs of this once strong community. Those I have are from when I was around 4 to 6 years old and only show outside of our house and a couple I have of the old... [more]

Cleveland Living Memories

This impressive building, constructed in 1958, was the headquarters of ICI's Agricultural Division until the early 1990s, serving a major international fertiliser business. It won a number of architectural awards. This must be an early photograph, because cars had later to be parked behind the building in the famous 'toast rack' construction on the right of this view, which is not... [more]

Cleveland Living Memories

Here we have a clear, open view across the John Whitehead Park to the Stockton and Billingham Technical College in the distance, with the community centre just visible on the extreme left. The park was opened in 1953. The Billingham town shopping centre lies immediately behind the photographer. Recently the college operations have been moved to a new site by the... [more]

County Durham Photographic Memories

Billingham owes its development to the Great War, when a small chemical works opened nearby for the production of synthetic ammonia for use in explosives. Between the wars the population of Billingham rocketed as the works was expanded for the production of methanol, chemical fertilisers, and petrochemicals. The town centre was redeveloped from the late 1950s by Elder Lester & Partners;... [more]
