You would take your life in your hands if you tried to take this view looking south up the A650 Bradford-Skipton road in the centre of the Airedale town of Bingley today. In the mid-1950s, however, there were still horses and carts in the street (centre), and motorists still had time to read the advertising hoardings visible on the building on the left. The lane off to the right leads to the parish church of All Saints.

My gandfather was Alfred Patchett and he was a successful butcher in the making when he opened his butchers shop in Chapel Street, Bingley. I believe it is the road which runs off to the right in this photograph. I have a photo of him standing proudly in the doorway of the shop,only a young man in his early 30s.
