Memories of Hertfordshire
My 3rd Great Grandfather
The 1841 Census says that my 3rd great grandfather, William Little, with wife Ann and family, lived at this Windmill. His occupation is stated as 'Miller' so I guess he worked on the premises. One of his sons, George, grew to marry Mary Ann and run the Barley Mow Beer House on Chapel Hill. His daughter Mary Ann was a barmaid there at age 19 and at George's death his wife took over the running of the premises. It passed into the hands of other family members later.
RAF Stansted
I was stationed at RAF Stansted (263 MU) Oct,1946 to Feb,1947. We had between 100 to 200 RAF blokes and about the same figure for German POW's. The station was a storage depot and was closed for air traffic. I am looking for old photos or drawings etc. Ron Taylor
Hassobury School, Farnham
I used to go to a boarding school in Farnham, it was Hassobury, a big mansion,
it was in Hazel End. Across the fields from there we used to go to a church for holy communion before breakfast, I am not sure if it was St Mary's.
Stansted Airport in The Late 60's
I remember as a lad cycling from Bishop's Stortford to the old Stansted airport. In those days there were just a few buildings with a very small terminal building. You used to be able to approach the airport via a lane and there was nothing more than a set of lights at the end of the runway to stop you crossing when planes were taking off or landing. Naturally as boys, we crossed so we could be under the planes to be adventurous. In the terminal building you could get a few stickers for destinations such as Barcelona, we stuck these on our bikes with pride and would call back most weeks for new supplies. I remember one airline that operated there "Channel Airways" and a man there named Claud. If asked nicely, he would show you onboard a plane that was in the hangar.
Childhood
I was born in White Roding in 1961. In 1968 my family and I went to live in Bishops Stortford. While we were there my father worked as a grave digger and landscape gardener in the local area. I fondly remember going to some of the church yards with him and playing while he worked. The church at Little Hallingbury was one of those churches. We emmigrated to Australia in 1969 and although I went home several times I never revisited the church. This photo vividly brings back my childhood memories of lovely warm summers days lazily playing in the church yard and marvelling at the beauty of the church itself....my love of churches and church yards has stayed with me since.
