Childhood Memories
This area has many happy memories for me. My Mom and Dad, Nan and Granddad lived in Holte Road, my parents would take me to Aston Park in the summer, then I would sit on the wall of the Holte pub and enjoy some orange squash and crisps.
This area holds a special place in my heart.

RE: RE: Childhood Memories
For much of my time in Balsall Heath I lived in Sherbourne Road on the corner of Arter Street, Mom and Dad owned the corner shop, this would be about 1956 to 1961. I spent my time from 1958 to 1960 in the Army. I was courting a girl named Astrid who lived nearby, we went to the various picture houses around the area, the Carlton, Clifton, Alambraha, Piccadilly, Moseley, etc. I worked at W H Smith & Sons Ltd, Stationers, in Hurst Street, opposite the Loccarno ballroom. The time I spent in Balsall Heath although short was one that I will always remember with fondness. I can be conntacted at btatlow@yahoo.co.uk

RE: RE: Childhood Memories
I was interested in the article about Ford Street, Hockley as that was where I lived with my family at No 4. My mom worked opposite at Wasdell's Mudguard Factory. We lived there from approx 1941 until 1963 when it was a declared a slum clearance area. The Flat was the shopping area which led up to the Birmingham Jewellery quarter where my mom moved to work there as a badge enameller which she had done for many years and this was even shown on her marriage certificate. It was a great time and we even in the 1950s/60s had a football team called The Fordonians who still meet on a regular basis. I don't remember the bombings there as I was not born until after the Second World War, but I do remember towards the end of the street a large wooden prop holding up a building, so perhaps that was a bombing of a house. It would be interesting to find out which exact factory was bombed.
