Gwent memories

Spencer Works Boxing Club

Mr Charlie Booth who also lived at Underwood Estate was my trainer/coach when I was selected to represent Wales versus Holland in the Amateur Boxing International tournament with Holland on February 12th 1970, which was televised on BBC 'Sportnight with Coleman'. I lost on points to Jimmy Vestappen the Dutch Lightheavyweight Champion.

I fought Maldwyn Isaacs the Welsh International heavywight at the Underwood Social Club, the club was packed and Charlie and I had some terrific nights in those days, he was a great friend.

Underwood Estate Pictures

I was born in 1981 and my earliest memory is living at 41 Waltwood Road, Llanmartin. I remember walking to school as a young girl and also remember a huge reservoir at the top of the hill. And a big car park or empty lot across from my house as well as a church nearby. I would love to get in touch with people from the area or anyone who has pictures they wouldn't mind sharing of any of these things. My neighbours were the Minchingtons? My mother relocated to Australia when I was 8 and I haven't returned since. If you can help or would like to share stories please contact me at: geraldandkirsti@hotmail.com

My Schooldays at Caerleon Endowed School

Our family moved to Brook Cottage, Llandegveth, in about 1945 when Dad went to work for Mr Joe Shepherd at Ty Capten Farm, and my three brothers, Arthur, David Noel and I would catch the canvas covered charabanc (bus) to Caerleon school. The Headmaster was Mr Lovatt and the bus belonged to Mark Howells Ltd of Caerleon. Noel and I, being the youngest were in the infants and the worrying part was having to go to bed in the afternoon on canvas camp beds in the class room. No one told me that we would be packed off home at the required time, and as a result I would lie terrified that the bus with Arthur and David on it would go and leave Noel and I behind. My friend was Arthur Tucker from a farming family at Llandegveth and I also recall Bobby Snook, Lelie Hammett, Leslie Bowditch, Barbara Trickey and Brian Harris. Robert Bassett.

The Vines, Ashwell

This picture of Ashwell Ref 32643 (Caerleon Old Village) is of 'The Vines'. My grandparents David Charles and Winifred Ethel Jenkins lived there during the 1940's/50's. I myself was born at 1A Ashwell Villas (not built when this 'photo was taken). I attended Caerleon Endowed from 1946 until 1954 when we moved to Gloucestershire. I spent many happy years in the village and had many friends with whom I have sadly lost touch with. After we left the village in 1954, the next time I visited Caerleon was in circa 2000 I met up with an old friend from Caerleon Endowned, Valerie Shierson who having earlier emigrated to Canada was visiting friends in the area. We had a great time visiting old haunts and exchanged many memories. I have since written a short story about my early schooldays in Caerleon entitled 'Both Sides of the River' by Cosette Allsopp (nee Lloyd). Google it - You may even find that you or somebody you know is mentioned !

Memories of War Years 1939-45 Newport

Memories of War years 1939 -1945. By John Beal. Little did I realise that I would be involved in the army when war broke out in 1939. I was attending Hatherleigh Central School in Newport at the time and as a young lad did not really understand what the fuss was all about, when it was announced that we had declared war on Germany, but I was soon to find out. It affected my education a great deal, because soon after the announcement was made by the authorities that only half of the schoolchildren would be in school at one time, in case a bomb was dropped. Half the schoolchildren went in the mornings and the other half went in the afternoons. If the sirens were sounded during the time we were in school we had already rehearsed to evacuate the school to be boarded with families in the Christchurch /Gibbs road Area. There was no panicking, just an orderly march to our allocated address. Hatherleigh was a good school, our headmaster... Read more

Football Years

I played for the first Sudbrook Cricket Club football team. We came second in the East Gwent 2nd Division and got promoted. I played with: Dave Clements, Mike Keogh, Paul Little, Ivor Baker, Tony Cochrane, Bobby Noade, Darren Noade, Phil James, Terry Bryant, Phil Smith, Carl Evans, Mark Stocker.
If anyone can add to the list or would like to contact me on the above address.
We had some great times as we built up the clubhouse and facilities. We used to man the bar all week using volunteers and enjoyed every minute.
The Xmas/New Year parties were a highlight when we had a marquee with huge heaters. Fancy dress was the main entertainment.
The Boxing Day matches were special for me, as I Captained on rare occasions against the Presidents eleven, followed by entertainment in the club and good cheap beer.
I was on the club committee and was secretary of the football team for years with help from Derek Clements and Paul Little. I liked them both.
