My gran owned the pub at Blackheath which was called the Forest King, it was on the edge of the cricket pitch. There was also another pub called the Volunteer on the next road. Does anybody remember them?

RE: RE: Pub

Hi Ian,

I don't remember them from that year :) but the Volunteer is now called the Villagers Inn which I visit quite often....usually after walking my dogs in Blackheath woods.
The Forest King is no longer there - the cricket pitch still is though.

RE: RE: Pub

Hi my partner is acually working on the 'Forest King'. It's obviously now not a pub but a private house, although it still looks very much the same which is so lovely.

RE: RE: Pub

Hi, this is a coincidence. I have just unearthed a postcard of the Forest King. It's the same picture as in the book. There is no family connection, except my dad might have had a drink or two there or stayed (was there accommodation?) when he visited his old schoolfriend who was a Franciscan friar at Chilworth. If anyone would like this postcard, not written on, please let me know.
