I have no memories of Blackwood as such. My interest started when I retired and took on my Genealogy! Anyway, I knew about Ossie Brown and the family butcher's shop in High St but especially his father, Arthur J Brown, my grandfather's brother. I was an apprentice at Chastons from 1953, just after Alfred John Chaston (known as AJ) took over the business from his father. At that time there were about 70 employees, with a workshop, body/paint shop, tyre department, stores, and showroom. The workshop foreman was Harold Davies, unkindly known as 'Shorty'. I remember Mr & Mrs Williams living on Marian Wen, they were our neighbours and there was a butchers shop near by. I was ten when we left moving to Canada, my maiden name was Alderman. The best memories was going to the movies in Blackwood where my mother worked as an ice-cream lady. I will be returning for a visit soon and hope to revisit some of my childhood memories.
