Happy Days
Ferniegair is very dear to my heart. Being fortunate to have two sets of relatives who lived there we spent many happy times visiting them. As soon as we arrived at one Aunt's house it was off with the coats and across the road to see the other relatives then of up the high parks to play on the swings and the giant chute, it was ever so high and how we loved it. We had a cousin who just loved us children and had such a vivid imagination and could relate stories (and still does) that fascinated us. Having grown up and had family of my own, Ferniegair featured high on their list of favourite places and it was good to see the same cousin tell my son and daughter the same stories. Early Days in Uddingston
I lived with my parents and grandparents in an upstairs flat 8 Clutha Place,101 1/2, (yes one hundred and one and a half!!) Old Mill Road, Uddingston until I was about two and a half. I remember watching the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II on a black and white TV in the home of one of the downstairs neighbours who I think was called Mrs Brown. The year was 1953 and she was the only person we knew with a TV set at that time. We, along with several other neighbours, were invited to crowd into Mrs Brown's flat to watch the spectacle I remember having a little gold coloured replica of the Coronation Coach to mark the occasion. After living in Holytown and then Bothwell, our family returned to Uddingston around 1961 to a house in Holmbrae Avenue. My parents remained there until 2004. 32 Maxwell Place Uddingston Bothwell
My Great Great Grandmother Mary Ann Bell (Nee Law), an American by birth, was living at 32 Maxwell Place, Uddingston, Bothwell in 1901 with her daughter Catherine Law Bell. Mary Ann was listed as a House Missionary in the census.
7 Glasgow Road, Cambuslang
An old friend of mine is desparately searching for a photo of the buliding where she lived - 7 Glasgow Road, Cambuslang. It was the first house she shared with her husband after they got married. Sadly, her husband was killed in a car accident a couple of years ago. She is looking for a photo to complete her own wee tribute album in his memory.
Halfway House, Cambuslang.
My great-grandfather James Crawford was born over Halfway House, a pub in Cambuslang. The road and building is still there, but it's no longer a pub. I went there last year, as one of my children now lives in Scotland, and it was great to see the place where a distant relative had lived. If you look up 'Old Pubs of Glasgow' on the internet, you can find Halfway House as it was.
The Norfolk Family Settle in East Kilbride
Work brought me to Scotland in 1975 and I needed to live within commuting distance of the Bank of England branch in Glasgow. Elizabeth and I looked around the south side of the City and fell in love with a beautifully restored eighteenth century style weavers cottage in Calderwood, East Kilbride. A new town is a lovely place to live when you are young and we loved it. Our son was born in 1977 and altogether we had three happy years living in Scotland before work made us move home yet again! We were very sorry to leave our lovely cottage home behind, and the garden which Elizabeth designed and built. Happily our dear neighbours also liked our wee house and bought it from us to make it their home. We have stayed in touch with them all these years as they became our son David's godparents. The 1950s
Hi all, I used to live on Easter Moffet golf course and attended Motherwell central school, my father was the club master in the early 1950s (Jack Potter). I used to go fishing down on the River Clyde between Motherwell and Hamilton near the Hamilton Mausoleum. I also fished in the Strathclyde Loch, I don't think it was called that when I was young. I also belonged to the Motherwell Scouts in Airbles Street near the bing on the left side going down the road. As I got older I fished more up the river near Muirhouse Towers area which was all woods in them days. I will post more memories as I remember them.
