Teenage Years in Blaydon

There was dancing at the Miners Hall, I used to love those nights, then there were three cinemas if I recall correctly, the Plaza, the Pavillion (the Pav), and another one that I can't rembember the name of, but I can remember it was near the railway and the seats used to shake when a train passed. I also remember Joe Sapps, an ice cream parlour, where we used to get drinks, soft drinks, and pack into the back end where there was a juke box, great memories.

RE: RE: Teenage Years in Blaydon

Wasn't it the Empire? It became Woolworths, I remember after it became Woolworths the floor sloped downwards. It is a shame there is no Blaydon town centre any more. Happy memories.

RE: RE: Teenage Years in Blaydon

I remember the 'Hall Pictures' which was near the Bisley pub. Me, my brother and cousin used to go there on Saturday afternoons. We lived in Bleach Green (which is now all changed and hardly recognisable). I remember old Blaydon, Blaydon Square with the Red Lion pub on one corner and the post office on another. The Co-op on the other side and of course Joe Sapps, where my grandad used to take us after mass on a Sunday morning. My grandmother used to live in either Edward Street or John Street and my great aunty Gertie used to have shop in one of those streets too. I moved away from the area when I was about 18 and when I returned five years later in 1973 the streets of Blaydon had been wiped off the map.
