Selmes Butchers
I remember being sent to Selmes the Butchers to buy my Mother Mrs Dora Maynard, cuts of meat. The floor was covered in sawdust and there was a little cashiers office at the end of the counter. It always had a very friendly atmosphere although I used to cry when I saw the animals being unloaded from the lorries into the slaughteryard. Once or twice I saw them escape. RE: RE: Selmes Butchers
The butchers shop was owned by my family for generations. It was only recently that the shop passed into other hands and is now an antiques shop. As a teenager I worked in the little office adding up bills.
The butcher at that time was Mr Coppard and Mrs Lockyer was the regular cashier. Mr Coppard was always a great favourite with the ladies. My uncle Toby was the master butcher although by then we were no longer slaughtering on the premises. However, all the slaughter houses were still there. Also in one of the many boxes in the house, was a finger bone chopped off by a careless butcher of the past.
The old oak tree outside the shop has recently been lopped which is a shame as the silhouette of the tree and the porch is one of my fondest memories of the village.
