The Lynx Youth Club
Is there anybody out there who remembers The Lynx in Maxwell Road? I remember seeing Rod Stewart, The Yardbirds, Georgie Fame and The Who there in 1964/1965. The youth leader was Maurice Barnett, we used to give him a terrible time but it was a good time.

RE: RE: The Lynx Youth Club
I remember the Lynx very well. Unlike most other contributors I lived on the Manor Way side of the Wood, in Featherstone Gardens and as I attended the Grammar School I would cycle past the studios and the Lynx on the way to school. I am glad you mentioned 'The Who' as I have told others that I saw them there before they really got big but no-one would believe me, now I have some back up! I remember them as being pretty poor at that time and pretty loud! One abiding memory from that time was after a night out in the village and a few pints I and my best mate Pete Cooper were walking back to my house past the film lot which was hidden by a ridge of earth. We could hear weird chanting and there were lots of glowing colours in the sky. All of a sudden a massive goat appeared to rise from behind the ridge near us! We didn't hang about and found out a few days later that they were filming "The Devil Rides Out". That plot now is the Big Brother set and my lovely Nan who lived in Bullhead Road would have been horrified at the goings on at the bottom of her garden now!

Yes, I remember the Lynx Club. I and a few others helped John Rowberry organise the music, we got The Who and Georgie Fame booked before they were really big but they had 'made it' by the time they performed, we packed a lot of people in on those nights much more than the legal 1000! We had some good bands, Long John Baldry, Zoot Money, Gary Farr & The T Bones, to name a few. I often wonder what became of John Rowberry, remember him? He was 6ft 7 inches tall, not easily missed! After the Lynx we also had a music club called the SinBin in the old Elstree Way Hotel - happy days 50 odd years ago! I lived in Melrose Avenue at the time previously in the old part of Manor Way. Now I live in Mumbles, Swansea.

RE: RE: The Lynx Youth Club
I am confused as both you and your respondents all refer to it as the Lynx Club.
I was the member of a band that played there several times in 1965 and 1966. I have a poster hanging on my study wall right now, advertising our appearance there on Saturday the 3rd December 1966.
It clearly refers to the venue as; Links International Youth Centre, Maxwell Road, Borehamwood, Herts. I cannot believe that there were two clubs of such similar names in the same street at that time, both booking acts like the Who, etc.
On one occasion we appeared there, the Who had been a couple of weeks before and the Merseys were due the week after us (their record Sorrow had just charted). The dressing room was an elongated broom cupboard!
Incidently the poster on my wall also says 'Dancing from 7:30' and 'Admission 5/-, Members 4/-.

I remember the Lynx and Maurice, he had a rather tasty daughter if memory serves me after all these years. The last band I saw there were The Amen Corner. Great club, makes the memories tick over... those where the days.

I should know, was it the Links or the Lynx? I can't remember & I spent enough time there - even went on two holidays organised from there, one in Rimini in 1964 & San Sebastian in Spain the following year.
