Borwick The Day My Father Brought Borwick

A Memory of Borwick.

Borwick 1946/1947 Sarah Gilbert daughter of Paul and Mary Postlethwaite.

On our return to England after out stay in Italy the idea was to look for a four bedroom house to buy. At the time we were staying in a Hotel in Kirkby Lonsdale in the North of England. I remember very clearly one day, standing at the top of the spiral staircase which led down into the lobby below when in walked my Father. My Mummy said "you haven’t have you". He replied rather bashfully, "yes I have". At the time I did not get the feeling that Mummy was very impressed. This was no ordinary house. It had a turreted Peel Tower, an Elizabethan Grand Banqueting Hall, a resident Ghost, a Priest hiding place and much much more. Sadly we as a family never had the experience of spending even one night in the magical place together. Just a few days after the Auction our father was posted with immediate effect to Germany. My Mother and we children quickly fell in love with the place. A few months later we joined my father in Germany and sadly shortly after that we had to sell our beloved Hall due to financial pressures.
